Not with that contract.
Teams will wait till he is cut.

Read on NOLA.com (citing ProFootball Focus) (New Orleans Saints Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma's days could be numbered with cap cuts looming | NOLA.com S2, P4) that Will Smith was ranked 62 out of 64 defensive ends...

The most amazing statement in that article was that he didn't always have the green light to rush the passer - I mean, WTF? Who's rushing the passer in a 4-3 if not the defensive end?!?

Neaux I don't see us getting a trade partner for Smith unless the Raiders have someone they want to get rid of and the Dodgers are an MLB team...

agreed but he is a better blocker than most of TE listed. he is more of a complete TE and better at receiving than Graham and Daniels. a blocking TE is what the saints need in the running game

Getting Bullish on Glover Quin and Ricky Jean Francois...

Still want to see Byrd and Edelman in the Black & Gold...

Getting the feeling the Bushrod is NOT coming back and our first round pick may be Lane Johnson OU...

Would Franklin want to come back to New Orleans?

Question of the day!

I'm sure money talks but I also wonder if there are any hard feelings about releasing him last year.

He'd be perfect for our new 3-4, whether we go 1-gap or 2-gap.

Hey Abreayo, you can have your old number back?

I will personally cook you gumbeaux each week Abrayo if you play in 70% of the snaps leading a top 15 unit...

Ditto, and I'd settle for a 50/50 ratio with Bunkley.

Why do you think that? Jordan and Hicks are much better fits there.

Bunkley has NT written all over him. He was the #1 rated 3-4 NT when he was at Denver.

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

Joe Flacco's agent announced that Flacco should be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL; that should expose some FA for the Ravens (Kruger)...

...now if we could just get some freaking cap space!!!

lee909 02-06-2013 07:36 AM

I wonder what exactly he bases that on.

nah he is good but has not proven a solid track record for that kind of money. top 4 to 7 sure. i could see 5th or 6th

Per his agent, he has as many SuperBowl Rings as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers...

lee909 02-06-2013 10:19 PM

So does Trent Dilfer
He also hasn't thrown a completion percentage over 60% for two years a d never threw over 4000yards.Never threw over 25 TDs in a season and averages close to 10 fumbles a years.

Brees or Flacco - it's not even close; but that's what Flacco and agent are arguing for and I say I hope he soaks up as much of the Ravens salary cap that he can...

Hire the Defensive Coordinator; inform him Will Smith, Jon Vilma, Roman Harper will no longer be retained...

He would be a MONSTER compliment in the Saints offense...

...in fact, the Saints would never punt...

Alexander is going to be a great receiver if he can stay healthy. He came almost out of nowhere last year, he was Rivers favorite target. Would be awesome in the Black and Gold!!

You know CMike, with his size and speed, I really can't see the Saints punting - and I don't say that lightly...

In about a month, FA will be underway...

I expect Will Smith to be the first cap casualty...

Probably a re-structure or a waive and re-sign.

I really like Cox too. He's a very talented player, but he seems to get injured ALOT. If he could stay healthy, he'd be a GREAT signing.

I'm on board with the poster that mentioned Delanie Walker also. I think he'd be a great fit with us.

I also want to submit, FA ILB Larry Grant from S.F. He's an excellent player that could start for just about any team that doesn't have Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman already on the team.

Danno, I can't see him playing in 3-4 defense; he's been as fast as a Nose Tackle the past five seasons which he doesn't have the size, ability to play...

He played in many 3-4 packages as the RDE under GW. He's not the player he used to be but he could play that RDE position OK.

Papz pointed out in other threads that he's just barely under the prototypical size for one.

I'd welcome him if the price is right. I do think he'd get better offers as a 4-3 DE though.

What are Terrance Knighton's props?

he is young and when Jack was with the jags he was one of better runner stoppers in the nfl. the kid needs a new start imo. he can be had for cheap after last year.

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

Yeah, Knighton played for the vet minimum for the JAX under his last contract, so he won't brake the bank and would therefore provide some needed depth at the NT position.

Since the draft if deep in D-linemen I would just as soon see Smith go some where else and be average at best.

Yeah, but food is better here than in Jacksonville - so will he have Johnathan Sullivan Syndrome?!?

A good kid who can't control his weight - that's frustrating...

At least it wouldn't be a high risk type of a signing since his salary would be very close to that vet minimum, and you could add some bonus clauses for him to keep his weight under a certain limit.

Anyway, I think he would be a nice big anchor for the nose, who'd be cheap and he could potentially surprise a lot of people because he does have some skills - maybe New Orleans would be the place to get that potential out of him?

Well, there are not that many 3-4 NT on the market this season; but I'm all for affordable depth...

affordable depth is key

it is the chance that he will blossom here.

he has a chance to be steal in FA, much more so than 90% of the free agents out there. If he returns to form he played with under Jack Del Rio he will take the starters role in a heart beat.

Yes i am that high on him getting a change and winning is just what he may need. high rewards gamble with very little risk.

opps am i talking upside lol

No, and I have no problem with risks; it's just we don't have many bullets left and we've got two thirds of the league who have plenty of ammo and the room to add him as depth when we need a starter...
