I really do not want to use a first round pick on someone who can't start right away.

Re-grading the 2011 NFL Draft: The time I gave Christian Ponder an A - CBSSports.com
"New Orleans Saints 2011 grade: B-minus The skinny: They landed defensive end Cameron Jordan with their first-round pick, 24th overall, and he has become a top player. That's value. They also traded back into the first round to get running back Mark Ingram, who hasn't lived up to expectations. Third-round pick Martez Wilson was let go last season and is now with Dallas. They got nothing else from this draft. How I did: I liked the pick of Wilson in the third round. Oops. I questioned the move to trade back into the first round to get Ingram, and that has played out. My third-day gem was pass rusher Greg Romeus, who was coming off knee surgeries, but he didn't work out. Re-grade: C-minus" Yeah, it's Prisco, but that was not a fruitful draft... |

Not sure this article will post correctly from phone. If not worth a look on bleacher report
Zach Mettenberger Among NFL Prospects Who Reportedly Failed Combine Drug Test USA Today May 5, 2014 Former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger and former Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan were among a group of 10 players who reportedly failed their drug tests at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.***** Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, with assistance from a report by ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio, has the news:* The top prospect on the list was*Florida State*defensive tackle*Timmy Jernigan, who is projected as a mid first-round selection. Another big name was Louisiana State quarterback*Zach Mettenberger. ProFootballTalk.com first reported that Mettenberger tested positive for having a diluted urine sample, which would count as a failed test under the NFL's drug program. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com later confirmed the report on Jernigan and Glazer added more details on his failed test: Other players on the list include LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, Miami tackle Seantrel Henderson and Florida State linebackers Telvin Smith and Christian Jones.* Jernigan showed flashes of both*dominance*and inconsistency while recording 63 tackles and 4.5 sacks for the Seminoles last season, but he was downright dominant against Auburn in the national championship, creating consistent disruption on the interior.* The 6'2", 299-pound defensive tackle has always had the talent, but that performance boosted his stock into first-round territory. Many still aren't sold, however, and Rotoworld's Josh Norris recently said he wasn't a first-rounder:* Adding a red flag may just solidify that fact.* As for Mettenberger, his physical therapist, via Florio, is claiming that his diluted sample was the result of the rehabilitation process for his torn ACL: (Mettenberger) was experiencing frequent muscle cramping during the day as well as at night while trying to sleep. (He was advised to drink) as much as 1 to 1.5 gallons of of water per day, to increase his consumption of foods high in potassium, and to increase his sodium intake. "The kid didn't do anything wrong," agent Joe Linta added, via CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. "He was doing what the doctor told him to do." According to Florio, a diluted sample is still treated as a positive sample. Although Mettenberger is coming off a serious injury, he thrived in Cam Cameron's NFL system as a senior and*continued to improve his stock during April's pro day. Still, Bleacher Report's Will Carroll argued that this development combined with his injury should keep him out of the first-round discussion:* A second- or third-round choice is most likely for Mettenberger.* CBS Sports lists Smith as another potential second-round pick and Johnson as a fourth-round prospect, while there's a chance Jones and Henderson won't hear their names called.* A failed drug test isn't going to make or break a career, but it's hardly a red flag that NFL teams want to see just three days prior to the start of the draft. It's often little things like this that sway teams on the fence one way or the other.* It remains to be seen how this news will impact the players involved and the interested teams around the league on draft day. After a long pre-draft evaluation process, we won't have to wait long to find out.* |
Re: 2014 NFL Draft
I'm hardly a Mettenberger fan, but a diligent patient 'over-hydrating' during rehabilitation is very common...
There's got to be a more conclusive process to determine substance abuse - which I find inexcusable when giving the gift and privilege of playing in the NFL... |
Re: 2014 NFL Draft
Wasn't so much Mettenberger I was interested in but the two Florida State LB's. It doesn't say what there reason for failure. That test could be the final nail in Henderson's hopes. Huge talent but no mentality to work it seems

Re: 2014 NFL Draft
He is a big boy for a SS.
Just reading NFL write up. Doesn't make much sense in places, not a great tackler and gets bullied. Id say causing 8 forced fumbles shows he hits hard and often on the arms, elbow or the ball. Jonathan Dowling*(SS) HT:*6'3"*WT:*190LBS. POSITION:*SS SCHOOL:*Western Kentucky ARM LENGTH:*33 1/8" HANDS:*9 1/4" Overview Was rated as one of the top safeties in the country as a Florida prep. During his senior season, he had 14 interceptions (returning two for touchdowns) and three blocked punts. Also lettered in track. Began his college career at Florida, seeing action in two games as a true freshman in 2010. In November, though, he was kicked off the team in-season by coach Urban Meyer for reportedly not complying with staff and coaches as well as skipping class. Sat out in 2011, transferring to Western Kentucky. Returned to the field in 2012 and immediately made his presence felt, recording 68 tackles, seven pass breakups and six interceptions with 2.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in 12 games (11 starts) at free safety. Scored on a 39-yard interception return against North Texas. Was suspended one game for a hit classified as "flagrant and dangerous," which had earned him an ejection. Started 12 games and had 67 tackles, seven pass breakups and three interceptions with one tackle for loss and an NCAA-leading six forced fumbles in 2013. Returned a blocked field goal 70 yards for a touchdown against Morgan State. COMBINE STATS40 YARD DASH:*4.52 SECBENCH PRESS:*8 REPSVERTICAL JUMP:*33.5 INCHBROAD JUMP:*118.0 INCH3 CONE DRILL:*7.04 SEC20 YARD SHUTTLE:*4.24 SEC60 YARD SHUTTLE:*11.56 SEC ANALYSISStrengths Has a rangy frame with room for added bulk. Excellent height and long arms to contend in the air and play the pocket. Good hands to snatch interceptions. Nice linear fluidity. Covers ground with long strides -- rangy off the hash to get over the top. Flashes striking ability when his shoulder blows connect. Playmaking ability -- 9 INTs and 8 FFs in last two seasons. Has special-teams experience covering kicks. Weaknesses High-cut and lanky for a safety -- durability could be an issue and he needs to add body armor. Gets bullied in the box. Average eyes and instincts. Takes some inaccurate angles. Shoddy tackler with poor fundamentals -- hits too high, ankle-bites low or launches himself and whiffs. Talks too much and shows off-putting body language. Questionable mental toughness. Thinks he’s better than he is. Character, maturity and coachability should be looked into. Draft Projection Rounds 4-5 Bottom Line Lean, long-levered, smooth-muscled, finesse free safety with speed and range, though he's more interested in hitting than securing tackles. He does not provide dependability desired on the back end. |

So stop screwing around. Bucannon is the man! glad to see i was not all that crazy about adding another SS. Since when is Kenny a FS? he is more of a rover safety back there than a FS or SS. that is what he does best. the saints may have come up with a new safety sub listing Queen of the beauty show at the combine. none prettier. Best of show hands down. NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Deone Bucannon Bucannon is 6-foot-1, 211 pounds. He finished his college career ranked among the Cougars’ all-time leaders in tackles (384) and interceptions (15). He never missed a game, which given his style of play, speaks volumes about his durability. Deone Bucannon FIND ME A BETTER PRODUCTION RECORD PLEASE He can not get the love. They are bigots !!!!!!! SS that can out play FS? Impossible. they are IDOTS :brood: Byrd + Deone has a solid chance of becoming the best ball hawking Satey combo in the NFL. Then to have Kenny running around doing his thing with Bush sprinkled in ... it is a dream come true. who says 4 safeties can not take the field at the same time? |

boy as usual i whiffed with the saints.
rounds 1 and 2 i can see and accept. Toy for SP but the price was steep. I hope Stanely reaches 75% of upside. in the gods we must trust the saints did not need a OC. because if we do Drew at risk do to SP play toy then not to go seriously after one after the draft? we better sign a vet IMO one day this risk taking will blow up in the saints face, last year was to close for my liking. |

Re: 2014 NFL Draft
Well, I really didn't see Khairi Fortt, OLB, California; Height: 6’ 2”; Weight 242 lbs. past the middle of the third round - crazy, deep draft probably overwhelmed many GMs with options...
Really believe fans here are gonna like this guy, and when he gets his opportunity to shine, plus salary cap ramifications for the ILBers Lofton and Hawthorne next season, don't be surprised to find this guy a starter... Powell's big question mark is the knee, same as Victor Butler; similar players but Powell has the higher ceiling if he can get those medical issues way behind him... Disagree with Saints regarding OL value in the draft in the fifth and taking Sunseri - Superbowl contender or not, you don't draft players for special teams unless it's the sixth/seventh round and there an exception kicker, punter, or return bloke... Damn, we should have use that fifth round pick on Sunseri on an Interior lineman such as Zach Fulton or the NT McCullers out of Tennessee... Wow, Steelers stole Martavis Bryant - know we've stole our share, but looking forward to watching how that pans out... |
Re: 2014 NFL Draft
Best thing that ever happened to the draft process was the salary slot assignment of a rookie draft pool...
How many careers would not have been derailed, delayed by player/agent greed had this CBA section been added years ago?!? We've got our second, both fifth, and sixth round selections under contract; so we're still waiting for the first and fourth to sign... |
Re: 2014 NFL Draft
plus now you can sit a first rounder and not break the bank. that is why if the saints did draft a QB it was cool with me
