Re: 2014 NFL Draft

The reports suggest that the Rams expected him to fail a physical. Sounds like a mixture of remorse and a injured player.

Bit of luck for the Rams.

i will be shocked if oakland drafts anything but flash in the draft. Al's spirit is haunting the draft room still.

Raiders thought Saffold needed immediate shoulder surgery | ProFootballTalk

As to (GM Reggie) McKenzie, (NFL Writer Mike) Silver suggests he could be gone before the draft. If McKenzie survives until May, it’s hard to imagine he’ll still be around in January. At this point, McKenzie may not want to be.

Draft Prospects Watch List By Round...

Georgia Tech Jerimiah Attaochu, ND Troy Niklas, Michigan St Max Bullough, Vandy WR Jordan Matthews, OLB Howard Jones, CB Walt Aikens et al are my favorite prospects in the draft (italicized)...

Deepest Sleeper with Plus-Athleticism is OLB Howard Jones, Shepherd...

Steal Pick is now Jerick McKinnon (Totally Missed This Guy if Not for Sir Lee of Waterford on England)...

All-In Trade?!? maybe for OLB Khalil Mack or OT Jake Matthews...

Save Lamin Barrow, a 43 LB, not an LSU prospect I like...

...especially don't like either of the LSU WRs with an early pick...

Really Like trading back from the first round for a second and third round pick as this is a deep draft and best Top 100 in several years...

gone

Now we are in reality land all are solid reaches

Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt 6025 212 4.46
A big strong and fast WR that puts up numbers no matter who threw to him. whats not to like. route running a pro level tree does need a bit of work. But he has a great chance at becoming that #1 WR the saints have never had

Jerry Attaochu, OLB, Ga Tech 6032 252 4.57 (Pro day 3/28 )
Now here is upside drafting with low risk factored in. But still bigger reach. Trade back and land him i would be cool with it i guess. wish he would stayed in the same scheme he player in his Jr year. would have loved to see how he evolved.

First off i like My mighty mice in round 1. i usually do not

Brandin Cooks, WR/KR, Oregon State 5096 189 4.33
He would give the saints that instant home run threat SP loves and the a player that should have that Darren Sproils "Mess with the defenses" head game effect. The more i think about i swear this is the direction the Saints will go. Especially after giving the defense the #1 FS out there. This is the type of player that can electrify the Dome. Yep the "Bush Factor" Put him in the slot and watch him drive LB and safeties crazy as they try to help out the nickle back. Jimmy would love having him running up the seem with him. Safety standing there picking the poison in coverage help. Even Bryd would be having nightmares

Jason Verrett CB TCU 5095 176 4.38
He is one of the best Sneaky Fast CB to come down the pike in a while. IMO he would putting a finishing touch on for the secondary from game one. All that would be left is the fight for the second outside CB position. The saints now could go true man on man against those jitter bug WR. I see him shutting down the slot wr from day one. This is the only CB in this draft that could possible cover Cook and he showed what he could do against LSU. In the pass happy nfl today a nickle back is of more value than he use to be. You need 3 starting CB that can do different things.

Best players on the board to get the phones ringing from teams atop the second round and would not kill us to pass on or take.

Zack Martin OT/OG Notre Dame 6041 308

Ok he is good but day 1? i put him ahead of Moses but neither should be in round 1, they are solid day 2 picks so here is my reach. Should start right from day 1 at RT and is very Drew friendly at 6'4" Big plus is in 3 years he can slide inside to OG when the big 2 become FA. So he has a very cap friendly appeal down the road. So worth the reach in round 1 in my book.

My turn High rewards low risk.
Ryan Shazier, OLB/ILB Ohio St. 6011 237 4.36?
tremendous athlete hybrid defender. plus he can be moved all around in the defense. i was not sold on him at first but with his speed and coverage skills which i under valued i would start coaching him up at ILB from day 1. Another player a bit small for my liking at both ILB and OLB but solid flexibility is hard to find in an athletic freak like this. Third down LB from day 1 that will be lined up all over the place

scare me away players
Kyle Fuller CB, Virginia Tech - injuries
Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State - not sold on him after his play last year
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State - big sure but he bumbles

He'll be right with the receiver on every play...

...and they'll catch the pass right over the top just as we do against ATL, TB, CAR via Colston and Graham...

...he's just too short for a first round, lock-down corner, maybe a nickel cornerback with a team with no needs in the late second...

...and it's not just the Heel to Head Length, it's the outstretched arm length added as well...

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

WEAKNESSES: Not an elite athlete overall. A bit slow to 'shoot his gun' when ballcarriers are running at him and relies too much on a simple bull-rush when coming off the edge. Wasn't as disruptive as a senior, in part due to opponents game-planning to avoid him. However, he was also without 2013 first-round pick DL Ziggy Ansah occupying blockers in front of him.

Relies on instincts and efficiency, rather than physicality. Beats blockers to the action, rather than taking them on shedding violently and isn't an explosive tackler. Projects best as a traditional outside linebacker in the 4-3 alignment because of this lack of take-on mentality, though he has shown the ability to get to the quarterback.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

1. Ra'Shede Hageman DT Minnesota
I just don't see letting this guy go by us.
2 . Keith McGill CB Utah
Guy has size and is fluid
3. Jordon Matthes WR Vanderbilt
He falls in our lap
4. Marcus Martin C USC
With 2 pro-bowl gaurds on his sides this has the makings of run or pass written all over it.
5. Lorenzo Taliaferra RB Coastal Carolina
Payton likes small school guys and this one has size, speed and toughness not to mention he's 229 lbs. My thumper.
5. Andrew Jackson ILB Western Kentuckey
When a guy patterns his play around Ray Lewis and his presence is felt on the field I'm in.
My thinking is Ryan getting Byrd in the secondary and adding McGill in the draft our secondary is set. Adding Jackson at ILB with Lofon and the addition of Hageman at DT who can play multiple positions up front, running on us will be hard. Kind of like damn if you do, damned if you don't.
On O Payton sets the O-line straight with Martin at C gets a power run game going with PT, Ingram, Robinson, and Taliaferra opening up the play action for Brees and still gets a new toy in a sure handed Matthews to throw to that reminds me of a prime Colston. Now if any team still wants Graham I think we could get another TE in the draft one that is well rounded.

Some scouting reports question Ra'Shede Hageman commitment to the game and more of a workout warrior...

Jordan Matthews is probably who Payton has in mind after their interview; though I'm warming to Donte Moncrief...

Liked Marcus Martin early on as a late fourth round pick, but I'm cooling after his rise into the third round despite a mediocre combine display which wreaks of agent hype (know it's their job, but I don't want to be the buyer; now, Weston Richburg he's the goods and is the only Center I want before the 100th pick; after that Tyler Larsen is a geaux in the fifth round...

McGill definitely has the measurables and he had an interception at the Senior Bowl on a busted play; but he's had several injuries, including the Senior Bowl Week and has no history against elite WR and struggled at the Reeses Game against Matthews and pulled a hammy trying to keep up...

Lorenzo Taliaferro definitely has size, but I'm not sure his running skills are a match for our zone blocking scheme; he's more of a full back and not sure he's proven his hands are that great; other than the 3-cone drill, his measurables indicate him more of a UDFA; but I'm definitely down with mining the small schools for the gems...

I pointed him out last year as a surprise second rounder. A first i never saw coming. the issue with him is not so much dedication as the Gophers kept him on the field too much. they did not have the rotation. In the NFL i am sticking my neck out here i think he will thrive in a solid rotation.

Then again there maybe a grain of truth to desire or lack of. as a pass rushing DT, which the saints do not have, he may just be what the doctor order for the DL.

He is one of those player high risk high reward in the first. 50-59 as to whether or not the pick pays off. I could live with the pick but i would be holding my breath till i see what we got.

Hagen, I hold my breath on all of our picks to be honest. I believe this guy with the players we have now would give us the best DL in the NFL.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

Rob Ryan is one of my favorite targets to bust chops about, as everyone knows, but the one thing i have always given him credit for is LB talent. he always builds one the leagues best LB units no matter were he lands as a coach.

So seeing him checking out Christian Jones makes me happy

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who paid particular attention to Seminoles senior linebacker Christian Jones for most of the day, also was on hand, as was Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/joyner-...5581--nfl.html

Christian Jones ILB/OLB Florida ST. 6031 240 4.74

I can't skip past this kid. going into the season i he was a top of the second type of player. Now 3 round? 4th round? i am amazed. Florida St did not do this kid any favors moving to OLB/DE this year. He belongs AT ILB in a 34 all day long. If you ever got to watch him at ILB he just had a knack for putting players in the right spot and diagnosing plays. Then again being able to play OLB also is a plus. For a team looking for depth/starter at the LB position i can write the kid of. Jack of all trades is killing his stock it appears. he could end up being a third round gem for this defense.

The key factor i keep running across about the kid is this

He was lined up on slot receivers (shut down Sammy Watkins) and tight ends through out his career and blanketed them with ease. great pursuit and closing speed to cover running backs out of the flats. Excellent open field tackler

Big negative: over aggressiveness

Everyone has him pegged as a 43OLB which i can see but i think the ILB in a 34 is completely over looked. Rob Ryan seems to take notice. He may need a bit of coaching and settle in the LB rotation but the learning curve should not be too step.

If we could jump back into the 3rd for Telvin Smith or Jarvis Landry

Right, we'd probably have to trade our first for an early second to pick up a third round pick...

And I'd also prefer to trade back and have several picks in the mid round of this particular draft...

I believe we may need to go OL here first. I think center is important because we need to be ready for the pass rushers we have next season. And then receiver.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

If we're selecting the BPA, and staying at pick no. 27, the positions that will be there are WR, OLB and DL...

Rather have the WR and it be either Jordan Matthews of Vandy or Donte Moncrief of Ole Miss; don't want small WR with a first round pick...

Should we geaux OLB, Georgia Tech's Attaochu or BYU's Van Noy are the guys I'd like to see us take and since we just moved to a 34, I'd pass on Van Noy and Shazier who're more 43 OLBers...

And we just spent two picks (r4s) to move into the third and select Big John Jenkins and we've an experienced, affordable NT to rotate, I'd pass on Nix in the first round...

If Matthews fell or Lewan, maybe...

And I'd only take Richburg before the end of the third round, otherwise I'm waiting to spend a fifth on a Center...

2014 NFL Draft order: Top three needs for all 32 teams - NFL.com

27. New Orleans Saints

2013 Record: 11-5
Team needs: CB, OL, OLB
Analysis: The addition of Jairus Byrd gives the Saints one of the top safety tandems in the league. However, they still need to add an edge rusher and must upgrade the offensive line, especially at tackle. With all of the young, talented quarterbacks in the NFC, you can never have enough corners.

Surprised Wide Receiver wasn't listed...

Can see Tight End becoming a priority should someone offer JG a contract number greater than the Non-Exclusive Tag we've assigned and might be unable to afford...

And all the LB positions could stand to be upgraded...

I'm surprised edge rusher was listed. It's always nice to have pass rushers but I wouldn't say it's one of the top three priorities. Saints were the only team in the NFL last season with two top ten sack leaders. As a team, ranked 4th in sacks and top third of the league in QB pressures.

Yeah, I'm not so sure the talking heads were watching the games; though, they basically got it right with CB and LB being needs...

But ILB is a big a need for upgrade as any position on the team...

I agree. I suspect the Saints will pick up a ILB early in the draft. I think this is a "prove it" year for Lofton. He's a big cap hit and if he doesn't perform up to the dollars, I think he'll be gone.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

I don't know about Moncrief. The name doesnt say number 1 receiver to me, and I feel we need someone who is.

The names to me that stand out
Watkins(we won' get him)
Benjamin(forget the bad hands as he has Winston throwing to him and Winston is a read option)
Cooks(even though he's not the fit for us)

The Decker-like players
Evans
Matthews
Robinson

Those with a number 1 upside but bust potential
Lee
Richardson

The safest bet
Beckham Jr, but he isnt going to be a Calvin or a Decker, he's a slot guy and would be more of a great no.2 contributor. If Colston's not in the slot now he could be what we need. But we need to have another stud on this team besides Brees and Graham.

Winston is not a read option QB. He's the real deal. I'm not sure you watched Florida St that much this year.

You can book this, barring freak injury, Jordan Matthews is and will be a better receiver than OBJ...

Decker, without Manning, might be allowed to hold his jock...

And if bloodlines mean anything, Matthews is cousin to...Jerry Rice...

This report best encapsulates Jordan Matthews...
