Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
I'd be happy with Werner or Moore if they go defense, why do I have the feeling it will be OT or WR in the 1st round

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

I'd be fine with an OT since the good free agents for that spot will cost a boat load of cap space - cap space the Saints don't really have. ...but some of the clips on that Werner kid do present him in a very good light, so he might be a really good pick as well. I just wish the Saints had their 2nd round pick, because it would make the 1st round pick less of an gamble, as it stands now, they must hit on that 1st rounder or make a good trade down. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Saints need to flip this thing on the League Office and get both second round picks back!!!

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Has anyone heard how Greg Romeus is getting on with his rehab?
Him and Toon could make a big difference to who we need to draft. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
We need pass rushing DE's and CB's who can actually cover, for starters. I don't think either position can really use the excuse that the other is the reason for their problems. People say that the lack of pressure makes the corners have to cover too long, and I agree with that 100%. But when there is pressure the QB seems to always find someone wide open to chunk it to. Both positions have been unbelievably awful.
The safeties make some plays, but consistently get burned in coverage aswell. And Malcolm Jenkins, despite the occasional amazing play, is one of the worst form tacklers I've ever seen at the position. But we need OT's just as bad as anything. I can remember arguing with a certain member on here in the off season about that very point. He couldn't believe that I would want anything on offense BEFORE a defensive player, because we were just so stacked on that side of the ball... You know who you are... How about that offense this year? If Drew is being paid 100 million to be the franchise player, you must protect him. I do believe that defensive help is just as important, but if the right guy isn't there, get an OT. |

That's a good question, and I've been wondering about it also. I think Toon will be fine to join the practices when they start in the offseason - how well he'll fit into the system and how good he'll be is a question no one can answer at this point in time, but he'll be another big body to throw to. Romeus is more of a question mark, even if he has successfully rehabbed from his second season ending injury and can join the team in the offseason - I don't think they can count too much on him contributing since at this point one has to wonder if his body can really allow him to play at the NFL level without injuring himself, and how much toll these injuries have taken on him mentally, but also in terms of being out of football for years. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
1st round- OLB Jarvis Jones
2nd round (via...magic or something)- OT DJ Fluker 3rd round- DT Jordan Hill or DT Daniel McCullers 4th round- DE Margus Hunt 5th round- DE Devin Taylor 6th round- CB Tyrann Mathieu |

LOT Branden Albert, Chiefs DE Michael Johnson, Bengals DT Henry Melton, Bears DT Terrance Knighton Jags Goodbye Sedrick Ellis Jermon Bushrod Will Smith Jonathan Vilma Brodrick Bunkley lmao nice pipe dream huh. what was the question? oh yeah draft draft round 1 Jake Matthews*, OT, Texas A&M IF HE COMES OUT !!!!!!! i think he stays so, Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State Height: 6-2. Weight: 185. Projected 40 Time: 4.44 He might be the best zone CB in the draft. he fits the size and speed that spags has always loved. pure ballhawk. Prefer to trade down round 1 Barrett Jones, G/T/C, Alabama round 2 Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington ok back to reality round 3 Alex Hurst, OT, LSU Height: 6-6. Weight: 340. Projected 40 Time: 5.19 Ok lets get a run blocker at RT that has improved his pass blocking. pefer if Wagner or Aboushi were avaiable here but highly unlikely. keep an eye on Brian Winters/OL/Kent State during the senior bowl. round 4 Michael Williams, TE, Alabama Height: 6-6. Weight: 270. Projected 40 Time: 4.77 I wanted him to come out last year. The saints need a traditional TE. To find this good of a blocker with above average hands is hard to find. think Heath Miller, ok he may not be that good receiving but he aint that far behind. round 5 Tanner Hawkinson, OT, Kansas Height: 6-6. Weight: 295. Projected 40 Time: 4.93 One of my favs for development this year. Might be the quickest OT in the draft. round 6 Aaron Mellette, WR Elon Height: 6-3. Weight: 218. Projected 40 Time: 4.45 Nothing really flashy here but solid hands, good speed and has some good hops. lets see how the senior bowls go for him. i see his stock climbing My annual bone head player pick round 7 Washaun Ealey, RB, Jacksonville State Height: 5-11. Weight: 215. Projected 40 Time: 4.46 good hands and a solid running back that pissed it all away at georgia. I can hear the defense draft members screaming already  |

I mentioned Albert earlier as a definite upgrade at the OT position for the Saints, but I don't think they can afford his services, since there'll be quite a few teams giving him a call once free agency begins. Johnson has intimidating size and good quickness for that size if I've understood things correctly, so he'd probably be a good guy to bring in if he'd fit Spags scheme - didn't he also play OLB with the Bengals?! Melton has proven that he can rush the passer in a 4-3 scheme, so while he has some pretty good talent around him with the Bears, he'd probably be an upgrade to Ellis and even to Bunkley. Knighton could add some nice depth to that DT group, and if he were to sign close to the vet minimum - as he did last time around with the Jags - he'd probably be a better cost/value signing than Melton. All in all, those would be some nice free agent additions, but I doubt that the Saints could land all of them even if they wanted to, especially Albert. I do agree with your cuts - and I'd include Shanle as the perennial "not to be re-signed" candidate - but I'd give Bunkley at least another year, because he has had to play a lot with Ellis, and no one will look good when they have to do the job of two man in the interior of that D-line. |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
FS is a priority to set the backfield, an outside linebacker is a must and though improved upfront Ellis is a weak link and always has been he's got to GO, we should be able to get a DE in free agency to replace Smith. , I also think our O needs some fresh meat on the line, they are getting pushed around alot, a new toy for Brees to throw at would be nice also, Payton also might think about a new QB. for the future our 100 million dollar man is getting older and if time is catching up we need his heir.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Expected Defensive Backfield moves...
Greer is restructured or outright released... Jenkins moved to CB; he is not a natural safety and could be an exceptional No. 2 CB and he'll be a great slot nickel coverage back... Harper will be released as his salary number is not warranted and his cap hit will be deferred over two seasons if we find a starter in the draft or he'll be restructured which I don't get the feeling he's likely to accept... Corey White may move into the Safety Group with Quaddus and Bush - but we still need at least one natural, bona-fide starter at Safety for camp... |

i really do not think cutting Greer is right but that contract needs to be part of the contracts redone. I change my pick with my first round pick. previouly it was Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State Height: 6-2. Weight: 185. Projected 40 Time: 4.44 ok the knocks on him is his reported 4.4 speed and the cush he gave wide receivers. so his stock may drop during the combine. now there is no way you can over look his ball hawking skills. he isn't a particularly physical tackler my pick is TRADE DOWN. get a pick in the second. Kenny Vaccaro, FS, Texas Height: 6-1. Weight: 215. Projected 40 Time: 4.47 Quote:
Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington Height: 6-0. Weight: 184. Projected 40 Time: 4.42 with the traded pick T.J. McDonald, FS/SS, USC Height: 6-2. Weight: 205. Projected 40 Time: 4.52 Yet another solid zone player that can step in an push for starting time. He is a FS but plays the run better than other FS in the game. now i have to address RT somewhere lol. But that should change the saints secondary for years to come. round 4 Sanders Commings, CB, Georgia Height: 6-2. Weight: 216. Projected 40 Time: 4.49 Isaiah Johnson*, FS, Georgia Tech Height: 6-2. Weight: 208. Projected 40 Time: 4.57 7/FA head case pick - all the talent in the world but has he learned his lessons Ray Ray Armstrong, S, Faulkner University Height: 6-4. Weight: 220. "Armstrong, who could have left school after last season, has since seen his draft status drop. I'm starting to like the idea of maybe dropping down a few dots if we can get a second round pick.
Looking at some of the mock drafts and with the likelihood of picking in the 14/18 range it could be worth dropping 4/5 spots down and still being able getting what is needed.Hopefully the Jags and Chiefs will go with the needed QBs and maybe even the Jets if there QBs continue to stink the place out. Looking forward to the draft and preseason kicking in next year allready. |
Just reading some mock drafts and Margus Hunt SMU DE/DT being mocked as a third rounder for the Saints.

Hunt, a senior defensive end, broke the NCAA career record for blocked field goals when he blocked his ninth career FGA against SFA and added another FGA block at UTEP. Hunt also blocked a PAT versus Texas A&M and is now second all-time in career blocked kicks with 17 (10 FGA, 7 PAT). He leads SMU with six sacks in 2012 and is second on the team in tackles for loss (8.5). Hunt has totaled 14.5 career sacks and 25 career TFL. Hunt will be the 26th Mustang to play in the Senior Bowl and first since Thomas Morstead in 2009. Hunt, who was named first-team All-C-USA earlier this week, broke the NCAA career record for blocked field goals when he blocked his ninth career FGA against SFA and added another FG block at UTEP. Hunt also blocked a PAT versus Texas A&M and is now second all-time in career blocked kicks with 17 (10 FGA, 7 PAT). SMU defensive end Margus Hunt (6-foot-7, 288 pounds) has accepted an invitation to play in the all-star game on Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The "Freak List" is an annual selection made by Bruce Feldman for CBSsports.com. Feldman said Hunt, who topped the 2012 list, "sounds like a Playstation football creation." Hunt is a native of Estonia and was the gold-medal winner in the shot put and discus in the 2006 World Junior Championships. He still holds the junior world record in the discus. Hunt started playing football in 2009 at the recommendation of SMU's track coach. He blocked seven kicks that season. Hunt holds the NCAA record with 10 blocked field-goal attempts and is second all-time with 17 blocked kicks in his career. Hunt is a three-year starter for the Mustangs and earned All-Conference USA recognition this season. In 2012, he has made 28 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks while blocking three kicks. Hunt becomes the second defensive end confirmed for the game, joining BYU's Ziggy Ansah. The Senior Bowl announced on Thursday that Ansah had accepted an invitation. - Mark Inabinett, Alabama Live 10/18/12 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: After shutting out UTEP, the Mustangs sprung a big leak in the first half against Tulane. Then, after allowing only 42 yards on the first six drives of the second half, they surrendered a 68-yard drive for the deciding touchdown. Injuries have depleted the secondary. With young players at cornerback and safety, opponents are targeting mid- and long-range passes. The front seven has been solid, but it cannot totally compensate for the backend weakness, especially against good teams. - The Sports Xchange 09/11/12 - 9/11/2012 NFL DRAFT SCOUT RISER: 2. Margus Hunt DE Southern Methodist...For a player who has received a lot of hype for his intriguing skill-set, Hunt's development on the football field isn't where most expected it to be entering his senior season. Many already know Hunt's feel-good story as a former track and field stud from Estonia who picked up the game of football three years ago. But besides his work on special teams with 15 career blocked kicks, Hunt has been extremely unpolished as an every-down defender. In the Mustangs' loss to Baylor in the season opener, he looked indecisive and lost on several plays as the action around him appeared to be moving too fast for him to catch up. Hunt is built well at 6-8 and 280-pounds but he doesn't have great football strength, easily being handled by single blockers and playing too high, limiting his leverage. He has athletic tools and will likely turn heads at the NFL Combine in February, but he will be drafted based on potential and not production because his play on the football field thus far has been disappointing. Being new to the game, scouts have been patient with him, but Hunt will need to show more as a senior this season to remain in the early round mix. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com Margus Hunt, DE, SMU Height: 6-8. Weight: 280. Projected 40 Time: 4.83. Projected Round (2013): 2-3. 11/17/12: The senior started out poorly in 2012 with a bad game against Baylor. He has played better since then including strong showings against Texas A&M, Houston, Southern Miss and TCU. Hunt has 23 tackles, six sacks, an interception, two passes batted and three blocked kicks so far this season. His technique in run defense and executing pass-rushing moves has really improved over the course of the season. 8/27/12: Hunt is a physical freak. The Karksi-Nuia, Estonia product is a raw player who really came on strong at the end of his junior season. He recorded all three of his sacks for 2011 against Pittsburgh in the Bowl game. Hunt also had 28 tackles with 7.5 tackles for a loss. He totaled 5.5 sacks across his freshman and sophomore seasons. Hunt uses his height to be a dangerous weapon on special teams. He blocked seven kicks as a freshman, three kicks as a sophomore and four kicks as a junior. It is entirely possible that the senior could end his college career with nearly 20 blocked kicks. Hunt may be best as a five-technique defensive end in a 3-4 defense for the NFL. |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

I really looked at this kid for a long time. i could live with the pick. I really like the talent in the 2nd and the 3rd rounds. After the top 10 in the draft you got those 10 20 were two or three are nice picks and then the rest have that upside label that drives me nutz. then 20 on down you get back to reality. check this out t's never too early to start thinking about next year's draft. Not every player on CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman's "Freak List" is eligible to be drafted next year, but the list is a good starting point for predicting players who will dominate draft talk in 2013. Feldman's No. 1 freak is the kind of player who has the potential to redefine what is possible at the annual event. Leading the list is SMU DE Margus Hunt. Hunt is 6'8" 280 with an 82" wingspan. He can also bench 225 35 times, which is ridiculous at that arm length. SMU track coach Dave Wollman predicts that Hunt will run a 4.6 40-yard-dash and bench 225 45 times at the combine next year. Those numbers would blow away the measurables of 2012 combine star Dontari Poe, who went 11th overall to Kansas City despite poor tape at Memphis. Hunt projects as a 4-3 end, which is an increasingly tough position to find in the draft. The skyrocketing stock of Bruce Irvin, Chandler Jones and Shea McClellin, the top three 4-3 ends drafted last month, shows just how much teams coveted players with upside who fit that position. It's not difficult to imagine the Minnesota Vikings or Miami Dolphins taking Hunt in the top 10 next year if they don't improve greatly this season. Wollman also raved about Hunt's pure athleticism, calling him "the most kinetic aware of any athlete I've ever had", which includes 19 Olympians. Hunt won the gold medal in the shot put and the discus at the 2006 World Junior Championships, the first athlete to ever win gold in both events in the competition. The Estonian had no experience playing American football until 2007, which puts an exclamation point on his virtually unlimited potential. Hunt's command performance of last season vs. Pitt Even if Hunt is too raw to play a big role on defense early in his inevitable NFL career, he'll make an instant impact on special teams. He has blocked 14 kicks in his three years playing football at SMU. With four more this year, he'll break the NCAA record for combined blocked kicks in a career. That ability will just be the cherry on the sundae for the team that gets this future household name in draft circles. SMU DE Margus Hunt Will Be the Story of the 2013 NFL Combine and a Top 10 Pick | Bleacher Report he may not be top ten but if he puts up numbers like this and shoulder is good he will fly up the boards |
