New Orleans Saints chat up a wide receiver prior to Senior Bowl
GENE HIGGINBOTHAM 8 hours ago With the Senior Bowl less than a week away, NFL teams are getting to know some potential prospects that could fall to them in either the upcoming NFL Draft or if they fly under the radar, could be snagged as an undrafted free agent. Shane Hallam who is a draft analyst for draftcountdown.com, tweeted a picture yesterday of a scout for the New Orleans Saints sitting and talking with University of Georgia wide receiver Tavarres King. For fans scratching the heads or thinking that the Saints need to be talking with a defensive player instead, just relax. The scouts on any NFL team wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t looking at all the merchandise. King at 6’1 and 200 pounds was pretty productive with his time as a Bulldog. For his college career he had 136 receptions for 2,602 yards and 21 touchdowns. His senior year was the most impressive with 42 receptions for 950 yards, averaging 22.5 yards per reception, and 9 touchdowns. On CBSSports.com and NFLDraftScout.com, King is currently projected as a 5th found pick in the upcoming draft which is where the Saints excel at in finding offensive hidden gems. |

Do anyone see us trading 2014's second rounder to get one this year?

Depends in if the right players falls out the first round. In sure it would cost us our second or third rounder this year aswell as the second next.
I'd rather see if we could trade a player for 2-4 round picks. |

I've always thought some form of knee brace/support should be mandatory in the NFL. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Some schools make all their lineman wear dem braces as a precaution. I'm not a 100% sold on it but I can see the reasoning behind it.
|
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Technique and drills is the best way to prevent injuries...
Never was injured till I was told to wear a brace - I truly believe in my mind/body that I relied on the brace and that's when it happened... Agree with precaution, but technique and skill drills are vastly under utilized on all levels - and the proof is in professional football players and the high number of mistackles... |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
34 effect is simple
we need a NT or they will run on us all day and all night. |
Will Bunkley be the NT or do we draft one?.
Looking at the draft rankings Star Lotulelei will be gone and after him Is it worth trading up for him? Johnathan Hankins*, DT, Ohio State Height: 6-4. Weight: 325. Projected 40 Time: 5.18. Projected Round (2013): Top-20. 12/22/12: Hankins started out the year extremely strongly for Ohio State. He was a monster in the middle of the line as a run-stuffer and a disruptive pass-rusher. Hankins was a dominant force against California, among others. He totaled 10 tackles and a sack while making plays all over the field. Hankins made tackles outside of his gap. One was on a wide receiver screen on the perimeter. He was beating double-team blocks from a guard and center to stuff runs at the line of scrimmage. Hankins' play cooled off some after a dominant September, but he still caused problems at the line of scrimmage and finished his collegiate career strong with a good performance against Michigan. Hankins totaled 55 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a sack. 8/25/12: Hankins is a massive tackle who takes up a lot of space and blockers at the point of attack. The sophomore had a strong 2011 season. He was a fabulous run-defender at that point of attack and totaled 67 tackles. Hankins also had 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks. He notched 16 tackles and a sack as a freshman. Even though Hankins only had three sacks last year, he was a better pass-rusher than the numbers indicate. Hankins got good penetration into the pocket to hurry quarterbacks and take away space for them to step up in the pocket. He has serious quickness that he uses to fire into his gap and disrupt plays. NFL coaches are going to love Hankins' versatility. He has played all over the defensive line. Hankins has lined up as a three-technique, on the outside shoulder of the guard; a two-gap defensive tackle technique; a defensive end; and the zero-technique - as a nose tackle above the center. Thus, he could fit as in a 4-3 as a defensive tackle, or in a 3-4 defense as a nose tackle or defensive end. If Hankins becomes a more consistent pass-rusher and is able to produce a quality sack total, he could contend to be the top tackle selected. With Ohio State's new attacking defense, it wouldn't be surprising if the junior increases his sack production in 2012. Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia Height: 6-3. Weight: 351. Projected 40 Time: 5.55. Projected Round (2013): 1. 12/22/12: Jenkins has 50 tackles with two tackles for a loss and a sack in 2012. He stood out with good games against Missouri, South Carolina, Florida and Auburn. Jenkins played well in the SEC Championship and beat Alabama guard Chance Warmack for a sack. Jenkins is a load at the line of scrimmage who can collapse the pocket while stuffing runs. He's helped his stock this season. 8/25/12: The junior college product Jenkins showed off massive size with some surprising athleticism in his debut last year for the Bulldogs. The junior had 28 with six tackles for a loss and three sacks. Jenkins is a massive load at the line of scrimmage. He is a natural fit as a zero-technique nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. It helps that Jenkins already plays that position for Georgia. Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama Height: 6-4. Weight: 320. Projected 40 Time: 5.35. Projected Round (2013): 2-3. 12/22/12: Williams had a rough start to the season. He was limited against Michigan and sat out against Western Kentucky with a concussion. Williams has played better later with good performances versus Texas A&M, LSU and Georgia. He had 36 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and one sack. Williams is a good run-stuffer, but doesn't offer much of anything as a pass-rusher. 8/25/12: The "tattooed monster from down under" has some shear power and quickness. The Australian didn't start playing football until he was 15 years old. He played a couple seasons of community college before breaking into the lineup as a junior for Alabama. Williams had 24 tackles with four tackles for a loss and half a sack in 2011. He was a starting five-technique defensive end but moved inside to tackle as part of a four-man front in pass-rushing situations. Williams should take on a prominent role in the Alabama defense since the Crimson Tide lost a number of players to the 2012 NFL Draft. Kwame Geathers*, DT, Georgia Height: 6-6. Weight: 350. Projected 40 Time: 5.55. Projected Round (2013): 3-5. 12/22/12: Geathers has played well as part of a rotation on Georgia's defensive line. He has 37 tackles, five tackles for a loss, a sack and a blocked kick this season. Geathers would be an every-down player on the majority of teams. He struggled in the second half of the SEC Championship Game against Alabama. Geathers can take over as the starting nose tackle next season if he decides to return to Georgia. 8/25/12: Geathers is a mountain of man who is difficult to move at the line of scrimmage. He looks like a good fit for a 3-4 defense, especially at nose tackle. Geathers should receive more playing time as a junior as he was team's defensive MVP for spring practice in 2012. He was mostly a backup in 2011 with 14 tackles. The sophomore also missed a few games. Nose tackles with Geathers' size are hard to find. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Johnathan Hankins*, DT, Ohio State - i watch a lot of big ten football and i really do not see the heart in the kid. talent is there the drive and hustle seems to be lacking. So ceiling is the selling point. buyer be ware over hyped and is going higher than he should in the draft.
Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia is interesting but can he be a 3 down guy? Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama - always looked soft to me. more bulk than muscle, not sure just yet Kwame Geathers*, DT, Georgia is a mountain. rotation would be needed but he is a big freaking guy |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
I read that about Hankins when we were mocked to take him or Richardson.
A lack of heart/drive in college players always worries me.If they are not willing to work hard then, what hope for them when they are paid millions. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Lets get a tub of lard!
|
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Man, I really don't like Hankins, he seems to take alot of plays off.
Besides with Bunkley and Hicks I think we are fine at NT. IMO I think the biggest need now is a ILB to play next to Loften, I just hope they're not set on Hawthorne being that guy. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Quote:
Bunkley is a bit undersized to be a 3-4 NT, but he did it in 2011 in Denver when they still ran a 3-4, and I seem to remember reading that he did well in that role there. Still, bringing in a cheap FA like Knighton from JAX could solve that NT problem and provide nice depth for rotation, and allow the Saints to focus the draft on more coveted positions like DE, OLB, CB/S, and OT. Why don't you believe Hawthorne could do the job at ILB next to Lofton, he is a natural MLB and a solid tackler - naturally neither one of them excel in coverage, but they've both had multi-interception years in the past. |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
come on bunkley got pushed all over the field by double teams all year long. i would love to see if Hicks can do a bit of time at DE in a 34
a 34 defense lives and dies with the NT. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
what are the chances mingo falls to 15th? some board i've seen have him dropping till then, but they also have T'eo going at 8th overall.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
So here's my question....since we're going 3-4 and focus probably will be NT best example of the prototypical NT you want to have is Haloti Ngata. Out of the guys on the board for the draft....which one is, or potentially is, the closest to a Ngata type talent? Just trying to get some opinions cuz I dodn't watch that much College football last year.
