2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Barely into December, and well, we can start talking draft...
...Love Draft Talk, Prospects, but in this context - it kinda sucks, but it's reality and know we wanna see our team return to the elite quickly... ...and we'll be drafting in the middle of the pack because of a midseason tease despite several years of neglect by the Scouting dept, especially in rounds 1 and 2... ...but the recent play of Jordan and discussion of a possible position switch for Malcolm Jenkins who's made remarkable plays despite inconsistency directing the defense has given hope for a defensive resurgence... ...yet it's obvious we are way short on talent on the defensive side of the ball and at the Offensive Tackle position... ...so with the College bowl games upon us and soon thereafter Senior Bowls... ...thought we could start building a Big Board of prospects... ...as well as priorities for the team... |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
OMG. Lol I just posted a thread that a new mock came out and has us selecting Manti Te'o.
Ultimate Edition of the 2013 NFL Mock Draft |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Some names that could be available to the Saints in the middle of the Draft...
Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri Barkevious Mingo, OLB/DE, LSU C.J. Mosley, OLB, Alabama Alex Okafor, DE, Texas Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Is te'o and OLB or MLB?
If he is an OLB, we should take him in a heart beat, just wondered because we have lofton at MLB |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Te'o is an ILB on a 3-4 defense. I had a convo with some friends about how I really liked the kid and wanted him in B&G and then I watched ND play and saw him line up.......No thanks! We have ZERO competent OLBs right now. Vilma and Lofton are true MLBs and do not function well on the outside. I would take Mingo and put him at the Will but even that scares me a little because we need production now. Montgomery is a BEAST, don't look at stats, watch games. He is chipped and double teamed every snap. Matthews from A&M.....YES! Actually any OL from A&M. They do not give up on blocking which is difficult when you have Johnny Heisman running around back there. Trade down and get Mosley might be our best option. He is a solid OLB and could really help the defense.
We need a lot of help, and we don't have the money to do it. We will have to do it through the draft. I will be interested to see what we do in the later rounds as that is where we make our money. We need in no particular order OT, WR, DT, OLB, SS. I think we have enough corners if they develop well under Spags. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
MUlti selection would have been a good choice for this poll.

Hurry up SEPTEMBER.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
This is so sad. 3 games left in the season, and we have to talk draft.
not criticizing, Im just saying. Its a dark, gloomy day where I am today. |
I agree it sucks to be looking forward to the draft allready but this season was always going to be hard with everything that happened.Im just hoping we can get the second round pick back.
In trying to stay positive and be happy we will have a high pick and be able to rebuild the defence and that when coach P gets back and we roll through everyone next year. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
We need a DT/DE first, got to replace the underachieving Ellis and/or Smith...
And the next pick, we need offensive line help... |

This years draft should have 253 picks |
Should the charges re: Bountygate turn out to not be a pay-for-injury compensation scheme as alleged, then not only should our 2013 R2 pick be returned, but we should be given a compensatory R2 pick at the beginning of the 2013 Second Round!
|
I'm expecting them to drop the charge from pay-per-injury to a pay-performance charge. It allows them to keep face and not have to worry about possible court cases from the personal who lost vast sums of money.Last years second allready taken away so reinstate this years second pick.
Just putting 2&2 together,probably coming up with 37 |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
They might give the Saints the 2nd rounder back this year but I just don't see them giving the Saints a second 2nd round pick even after the courts rule this was a witch hunt

Back to Draft Picks... For the first pick, I really like going with the DNA axiom and taking Bruce Matthew's son... Spend the first rounder on a kid that's going to be with your franchise for 12-15 years and that'll protect your investment at QB...just makes sense... |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
You have DE listed twice, but no DT. I think RT and LT should have been listed separately.
My opinion... RDE LT (If we lose Bushrod) OLB #1 RT DT OLB #2 CB #1 TE FS WR OC SS K |

Te'o is a middle linebacker and will be a top five pick. He's the second coming of junior seau. Go Irish!

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
still no one has listed my players yet lol
if we are in the top 15 i say its a short list and the saints need to trade down if the 2 or 3 impact players in the middle of the round are gone. |

Bushrod is an OK LT. I think he's a better LT than Strief is as a RT. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
I think that the priority should be with the defensive line, followed by the offensive tackles, and either a Sam LB or a playmaking safety.
But, as always, they should go with the BPA and listen to any and all potential trades to grow their pick pool, especially if the league doesn't return the 2nd round pick. As for Bushrod, I agree with Danno's assessment about him being better at his position than Strief is at his, but that is not a high compliment as Strief has been under performing the whole season even before his injury woes. Still, if Bushrod isn't willing to re-sign with a pay cut, I think they should let him go as they did with Goodwin two seasons a go. Oh, and please no players who need to be converted into another position or a different scheme to fit the defense of the Saints! |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
I know how bad we are at DE, OLB, and Safety...
That said, I'm starting my campaign for Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M for the Saints First Round Draft Pick... You don't get guys that come around the league that often with this kind of pedigree and DNA - his Dad was Bruce Matthews who tied Merlin Olsen for the League Record for Career ProBowls - if we get half of that, then it's a steal in the draft... And this kid can play and have an immediate impact... |

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
From Walter Football...
13. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri Sedrick Ellis has been a bust. He'll be hitting free agency this March, so it's unlikely he'll be back with the team. Canadian Akiem Hicks has played well, but the Saints need someone next to him who can rush the passer on the interior. Sheldon Richardson, who has been phenomenal this season, could be that guy. 73. New Orleans Saints: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State The Saints aren't getting much pressure on the quarterback. Cameron Jordan has improved in this department over the second half of the season, but Will Smith looks like a shell of his former self. He's due $10 million in 2013, so he obviously won't be back. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
I could go for a DT and a DE with the first two picks, but I think they might want to try and expand their number of picks through some trade downs if at all possible.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
1st/3rd round pick needs to be used on D-Line and O-Line; I agree with JP, we need 2 impact starters from the beginning there. We don't have the luxury this year of stock-piling picks...

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Yeah, but trading down from the 1st to early 2nd could still get them an impact player and maybe also get a 3rd rounder for it. I'm just saying that they should really try and fill as many holes in the draft as they can, because the new CBA makes rookies very affordable and they need to make some savings in the 53 man roster. They can always try and use some of those savings to sign a proven veteran impact player from the FA pool if they decide not to re-sign Graham during this offseason. |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
#1 is a defensive lineman that can get consistent push, especially in Spags defense. The O is good with what we have. We may not break records and score 50 points per game, but 24-28 per game will be great with a running game and a stronger D. Where's Walter Thomas these days :P
|
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Depending on where Saints lineup in the draft...
But I'm bullish on Jake Matthews, OT Texas A&M... I'm trending towards a proven, complement to Cam Jordan in Free Agency rather than the first round of the draft and here's why - I don't think I could take drafting another defensive lineman in the first round who's best first move is on the senior deacon in a sunday baptist buffet line... Besides, defensive ends typically have a prime life of three-four, maybe five years?!? I'd rather get a free-agent rental than invest a possible top 10 draft pick for a player that has five-six years with us... |

Should we pick between 10-14, these are some of the names and positions we could be looking at when we draft...
Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State John Jenkins, DT, Georgia Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri Barkevious Mingo, 3-4 OLB, LSU Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State Damontre Moore, 3-4 OLB, Texas A&M Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan |
Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board
Don't know how, but the fourth option in the poll was Defensive Tackle?!?
And has Hagan published his Wish List for the Draft? |
