Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

ok tonight's game

Hawaii Bowl Preview - SMU vs. Fresno State

Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State, #4, 6’3”, 215 (JR)
Carr is the brother of former #1 draft pick David Carr and possesses that same attributes. Carr has cannon for an arm and is able to make all the throws. Carr shows great touch on the deep ball and intermediate passes. Carr has good footwork in the pocket and displays great awareness to his surroundings around him. Carr’s football IQ is very good and can be seen when he is going through his progressions.

Robbie Rouse,RB, Fresno State, #8, 5’7” 190
Rouse is a well-built running back that has produced since being handed the keys to the Bulldogs running game and finding his way to the Bulldogs all-time leading rusher. Rouse runs low to the ground with good speed and power. He is able to make good cuts and accelerate after the cut. I like how hard Rouse hits the hole and is a north-south type runner that always ends up going forward after contact not losing yards on the tackle.

Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist - #92, 6’8, 280

Entering the season with a great deal of preseason hype as a potential riser among 2013 draft eligible prospects, Margus Hunt disappointed many draft analysts and scouts with what could be characterized as lethargic and inconsistent play. Still, a physical marvel at 6’8, 290 pounds, Hunt possessed rare physical talent and potential that kept evaluators watching his every move. Eventually finding his groove and improving hand usage off the snap, Hunt made notable strides as a pass rusher, leading the team with six sacks. An older prospect with little football experience and polish, Hunt’s physical ability will intrigue just about every NFL team in this upcoming draft. Likely a day two draft selection after the senior bowl and combine, Hunt needs a strong bowl performance to jump-start a crucially important predraft season.

Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State, #16, 6’1”, 215
Thomas has exceptional ball skills and awareness. Thomas an above average tackler when coming down into the box to help on running plays. In the secondary, Thomas is able to cover from sideline to sideline and reads the quarterback very well in pass plays. Thomas is coming off of an injury that sidelined him in 2011 and has proven that he is a top safety in this draft class.

Travis Brown, OLB, Fresno State, #9, 6’1”, 236
Brown is an ideal edge setter. He’s a player that will not stand out on film or in games but does his job which is to turn the play inside or stretch it outside. He does a great job of doing this. He has great strength and plays with great leverage.

Zach Line, RB, Southern Methodist - #48, 6’1, 230
Earning a third consecutive first team All-C-USA selection in a highly productive senior season that resulted in a Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year award, Zach Line is wrapping quite a storied and successful collegiate career. As an NFL prospect, Line provides excellent pass blocking skills out of the backfield and may be viewed by some as a potential fullback conversion, considering his body type and size. Provides just enough wiggle and elusiveness to avoid a direct hit to and through the hole, and impresses at times with a light footed, jump cut running style not seen often by 230+ lbs. tailbacks. Patient and balanced in his approach, Line does a nice job of allowing blocks to develop before hitting the hole, reading and reacting to the flow of the defense. Leg drive through initial contact can take defenders by size, but a bad habit of cutting off his inside foot leads to slippage on cutbacks from time to time. Line isn’t an elite level athlete with tremendous speed or even much power, but his production and pass blocking skills could earn a late round draft selection. Having accepted an invite already to the East West Shrine game in Orlando, Florida, it will be interesting to see if coaches give him running back snaps, fullback snaps, or a combination of the two.

Darius Johnson, WR, Southern Methodist - #3, 5’10, 175
More of a priority free agent than teammate Zach Line, Darius Johnson holds a well-built frame at the slot receiver position and could earn a draft selection with a strong series of predraft season workouts and all-star game practices. Getting in and out of cuts with a slight burst, accelerating out of route breaks to attack the football, Johnson maintains ideal route balance down the field and tracks the ball with ease. Dealing with a new quarterback in Garrett Gilbert, chemistry slowly developed as the season moved forward but production dropped noticeably for third year starter. Awarded MVP awards in back-to-back bowl games for SMU, expect Johnson to once again factor heavily into this contest.

Jordan Free, OG, Southern Methodist - #78, 6’2, 311
Following the footsteps SMU offensive linemen Josh LeRibeus and Kelvin Beachum, Jordan Free has emerged as a draftable guard prospect. Thick and possessing a low to the grounded build, Free surprises with agile feet and above average on the move blocking skills. Free’s footwork on power-o runs, tosses and traps should be very appealing to teams in need of depth at the guard position, as this Mustang could start in a pinch as a rookie and develop into a solid starter down the line. Not a devastating drive blocker by any means, Free wins his battles with leverage, and aggressive, sustained hand punches to his opponent’s chestplate. Currently grading out as one of the better day three values, I expect Free will be drafted in the 6th round range.

Taylor Reed, ILB, Southern Methodist - #44, 6’0, 240
Lacking the physical tools required to be a high round draft choice, Taylor Reed certainly has a chance to stick on an NFL roster thanks to field awareness, play recognition and overall instincts as an inside linebacker. Operating in a quick, sudden and efficient manner with his read steps, Reed does an excellent job of keeping his shoulders squared to the line of scrimmage while creeping downhill into his proper fit. Utilizes ideal block shed technique to throw aside lead blockers with explosive hands and hips, but can be swallowed up by bigger, uncovered guards. Reed also is able to shoot open gaps with enough acceleration to meet to back in the backfield, leading SMU in tackles for loss. Test numbers will ultimately decide this prospect’s fate as a draftable prospect, and a priority free agent grade seems to be the billing here.

Ja’Gared Davis, OLB, Southern Methodist - #56, 6’1, 235

Another disruptive player on this defense, Ja’Gared Davis has filled out his frame with a surprising amount of muscle and girth to his lower half. Strong enough to set the edge and play the run, while quick off his first step and aggressive with his hands to combat opposing tackles as a pass rusher, Davis is an everydown player for this defense; an all around impact that can be seen by a unique stat line, Davis has nine tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, five pass deflections, five hurries, two fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and one blocked kick. A priority free agent prospect in the same range as fellow linebacker Reed, Davis also needs a strong predraft season to work his way into the latter portion of the NFL Draft.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

SMU is another school that is really starting to produce...

Can Davis play as well with his size at the next level?!?

Hunt is alot like Michael Johnson, CIN that we've discussed - but do we have the window to develop a pass rusher? I like the youth though...

I like Jordan Free to develop as a Center...

You realize if he played in New Orleans, he'd be called Margus the Magnificient as an ode to a long time favorite of New Orleans?!?

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Very informative. Keep it coming ya'll. I am impressed with some of the reviews.......all at positions of need. Unfortunately, I don't feel like we have time to develop players who have an upside.(although Hicks did work out well)
I really believe that we need to draft the players who can come in and have an immediate impact. I know it's a crap shoot....especially since whoever scouts the large colleges for us doesn't evaluate talent well. But every year there are several players who undoubtedly will be premier players in the NFL.
I don't care if we trade all of our draft picks as long as we come away with a couple of difference makers on defense.:bng:

Dec 28th

AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl: Ohio vs La-Monroe

No draftable prospects ?????

edit
Louisiana-Monroe
Wide receiver Brent Leonard
Safety Khari Usher
Linebacker R.J. Young -
interesting late round?

Ohio
Cornerback Travis Carrie
Guard Eric Herman

Russell Athletic Bowl: Rutgers vs Virginia Tech

Logan Ryan, CB, Rutgers:
The junior cornerback was dominant in all areas this season and looked NFL-ready. Quarterbacks who challenged Ryan came out on the short end, as he possesses top ball skills and the football instincts to match. Ryan has a polished game and should compete for a starting job in the NFL next season if he enters the draft. 1st/2nd Round

Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers:
Jamison is another Rutgers underclassman with top tools for the next level. His game is justifiably compared to former Scarlet Knight star Ray Rice, as Jamison is slightly undersized but quick, tough and instinctive. He performs well in all areas of the position and would inject much-needed talent into a sparse running back class if he enters the 2013 draft. 2nd Round

Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech:
Thomas entered the season with high expectations but struggled for most of the year. He misread defenses, forced passes and made a lot of errant throws. The consensus is Thomas would be best served returning to the Hokies for his senior season rather than entering the draft. 3rd Round

Edit
Rutgers
WLB/S/safety Khaseem Greene
One of my sleeper picks late? It would be for this writter. Come on he is one of the top OLB prospects in the country. Now Jared Shermanfrom csnphilly.com knows better

Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers, No. 20
I wrote about Greene earlier in the season, and not much has changed. He remains the heart of Rutgers football and was just named the 2012 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, only the second player in Big East history to be receive that honor in back-to-back seasons (Virginia Tech's Corey Moore won it in 1998 and 1999). Green was also named to the 2012 Walter Camp All-American Second Team and AP All-American Third Team.

After starting his career in New Brunswick as a safety, Greene moved to outside linebacker in 2011 (he started 13 games at safety in 2010). It didn't seem to faze him, as he recorded 141 tackles and 3.5 sacks. A broken leg suffered in the 2011 Pinstripe Bowl did put a damper on what was an outstanding season. The redshirt senior didn't seem to be slowed in 2012, as he recorded 125 tackles, six forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks and two interceptions.

As an NFL prospect, Greene (6-1/230) needs to show he can keep the weight on to remain at LB, but the rest of the package is solid. Greene could go as high as the second round come April, especially if he displays his speed and smarts during Senior Bowl week.
NFL Draft Prospect Watch: Russell Athletic Bowl

MLB Steve Beauharnais,
under the radar a bit despite solid production.

VT
WR Marcus Davis
Is/was it the QB play or not?
WR Dyrell Roberts
Is/was it the QB play or not?
LB Bruce Taylor
LB Jack Tyler
DE James Gayl
has some moves off the edge.

interesting matchup
WR's Mark Harrison and Brandon Coleman Vs Virginia Tech CB Kyle Fuller.

Meineke Car Care: Minnesota vs Texas Tech

Ra'Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota:
Hageman is a former tight end who's coming off a career campaign in which he started 12 games. He's a large, athletic specimen who makes plays in the backfield or in pursuit. The junior is expected to enter the draft and is a terrific developmental prospect with the ability to start at several spots on the defensive line. 3rd/4th Round

Mike Rallis, LB, Minnesota:
Rallis has been a consistent defender the past three seasons and a linebacker who plays with a non-stop motor. He's a smart prospect who rarely makes mental errors and plays within himself. Rallis is most likely a backup at the next level and someone who should stand out on special teams. 7th Round

LaAdrian Waddle, T, Texas Tech:
Starting the past three seasons, Waddle has been a consistent blocker on the Red Raiders offensive line. He's a massive lineman who has been durable and versatile. Waddle has an NFL body and the ability to successfully fill a roster spot as a utility lineman. 7th Round

The Power Forward > Tight End > Defensive End Dynamic is happening with more frequency lately...

If Jimmy asks for more money than we can slot for him in the cap, maybe he can double up and get us some sacks!!!

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces: Air Force vs Rice

Vance McDonald, TE, Rice:
Despite missing three games due to injury this season, McDonald remained one of the top pass catching threats for Rice. He measures 6-5 and 260 pounds and has been compared to former Owls star James Casey, now catching passes for the Houston Texans. McDonald displayed improvement in all areas of his game this season, and scouts feel he offers starting potential at the next level. 5th Round

Kyle Prater | Rice, OLB

Alex Means College: Air Force Height: 6-4 Weight: 240 - OLB/DE? 7th/fa

New Era Pinstripe: Syracuse vs West Virginia

Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia: Smith comes off a sensational campaign in which he showed improvement in every area of his game. The big-armed signal caller matured as a leader, threw with better accuracy and made good decisions throughout the season. Smith now stands as the top quarterback available in the 2013 NFL Draft and positioned himself as a top-12 selection. 1st Round

Tavon Austin, WR-RS, West Virginia: Few prospects in April's draft offer the dynamic, game-breaking ability Austin brings to the field. He's a home-run-hitting receiver with reliable hands, as well as a nose for the end zone (12 receiving touchdowns last season). Austin also alters the momentum of games returning punts or running an occasional reverse. His lack of height (5-8 1/2) limits Austin, but his speed and versatility are enticing. 2nd Round

Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse: Nassib is ascending draft boards and quickly becoming one of the hot names in the scouting community. He's a terrific leader on the field with the arm strength necessary to make all the throws. Nassib makes good decisions in the pocket, squeezes the most from the talent surrounding him and has most believing he'll have a productive NFL career. 2nd Round

edit

Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
5'11", 193 pounds, but Bailey has great speed and ball skills

Marcus Sales WR 6-0, 185 Syracuse
2011 year-long suspension. hit with multiple drug charges. charges were dropped . Shame he has solid skill set you could work with. could be a steal in the draft

Shamarko Thomas SS/CB/LB? 5-10, 210 Syracuse
reckless abandonment works here throws his body around on the field, A bit too aggressive, bites on fakes. he needs discipline. Special teams beast?

DE Brandon Sharpe (6-2, 245) Syracuse
his name keeps popping up so i need to do some digging

Now there are two JR to watch here

Justin Pugh OT 6-6, 290, *Syracuse
good body control, good run blocker and mirror rushers in space. needs to fill out his frame

Marquis Spruill MLB, 6-1, 215 *Syracuse
Hitter, good in coverage, develop the mental side of his game?

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: Arizona State vs Navy

Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State -Junior: Despite struggling with a knee injury during the second half of the season, Sutton totaled an eye-popping 10.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss besides breaking up 5 passes. The junior is undersized, but uses his natural leverage and quick first step to blow by opponents. Sutton projects as a three-technique tackle at the next level. 3rd Round

Brandon MaGee, LB, Arizona State: MaGee rebounded from the Achilles injury that kept him on the sidelines in 2011 to have a successful senior campaign. He showed a well-rounded game this year, leading the Sun Devils with 104 tackles. MaGee plays with terrific instinct and awareness and will do well in a backup role at the next level. 7th Round

Rashad Ross, WR-RS, Arizona State: Ross comes off a disappointing season, but his versatility and big-play ability are enticing. He averaged over 14 yards on 33 receptions and 25.6 yards on 15 kick returns. Ross offers potential as a fifth receiver/return specialist for the next level. 7th Round

edit

Cameron Marshall, RB, 5’11, 223 #6 Arizona State
north south runner with plus athleticism and solid in pass protection

Keelan Johnson FS 6’1” 210 #10 Senior
speed and athleticism. interesting prospect that could be a steal?

Brice Schwab OT 6'7", 302
intriguing project?

Arizona State others
Alden Darby FS 5’11” 190 #4 Junior
Andrew Sampson OG 6’4” 300 #72 Senior

Keegan Wetzel OLB 6’3” 220 #48 Senior Navy
15 tackles for a loss and seven sacks. slightly larger than Warrick, has slightly less quickness, but similar athleticism and instincts.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Valero Alamo Bowl: Oregon State vs Texas

Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas –#4, 6’2, 210

Vaccaro has been a steady player on the Texas defense since his sophomore season. He offers a complete game and the ability to cover receivers across the middle of the field or defend the run. Vaccaro could be selected much earlier than many expect with a good performance in the Alamo Bowl then solid workouts before the draft. 2nd Round

Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State - #2, 6'1, 180

Wheaton comes off a career season which has steadily pushed him up draft boards. He's a reliable wideout with big-play ability and a nose for the end zone. Wheaton averaged just under 14 yards on 88 receptions, 11 of which resulted in touchdowns. He has potential as a slot receiver and could eventually develop into a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. 3rd Round
Alex Okafor, DE, Texas – #80, 6’4, 265

Okafor does not grade out well in the areas of size, speed and athleticism, but is a prospect who dominates once the ball is snapped. He's relentless in pursuit of the action and was a disruptive force throughout his college career. Creative defensive coaches willing to overlook Okafor's poor measurables could end up getting a very good ball player next April. 3rd/4th Round
Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State - #14, 6'0, 190

Poyer is another whose outstanding football skills trump his very average athleticism. Showing terrific instincts and ball skills on the field, Poyer rarely makes mental mistakes or gets beat. He lacks the speed teams want in a starting cornerback, but will make a fine addition in nickel packages. 3rd/4th Round

edit

Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State - #95, 6’3, 263
one of the best linemen in the Pac-12 with plenty of upside. steal?

D.J. Monroe, RB/WR, Texas – #26,5’9, 175
Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas – #84, 5’9, 180
Mason Walters, OG, Texas – #72, 6’5, 320 (JR)

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: Michigan State vs TCU

Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State: Sims is a complete tight end and a junior prospect who excites scouts. He has the size of an offensive lineman and the strength to annihilate opponents at the point of attack. Sims is not a true downfield threat as a pass catcher, but reliable and athletic when the ball is thrown his way. 2nd Round

Le'Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State: Bell is a large ball carrier with surprising short-area quickness and the ability to make defenders miss. He grinds opponents down on the inside, running through tackles or around piles. Bell also holds his own as a pass catcher out of the backfield and offers starting potential for a power running offense. 3rd Round

Jason Verrett, CB, TCU: The All-American cornerback made opposing quarterbacks think twice of throwing in his direction. The junior finished the year with 6 interceptions and another 14 pass break-ups. Verrett does not possess starters size for an NFL corner, but will be a very solid nickel back. 4th Round

Edit

#2 DE William Gholston* MSU 6'7" 280
big, athletic and block-shedding playmaker. motor concerns? 3.5 sacks and no real improvement in his play this year has raised red flags. Now if he declares get use to his name back into round 1 of the draft if he lives up to his hype at the combine.

#5 CB Johnny Adams, Michigan St. (5’11″, 175)
Tough against the run and a solid zone defender in the slot

(JR) Josh Boyce, WR, TCU – 6’0, 203 #82
Running routes from the X, Z and slot receiver positions, smooth athleticism. drops and lack of elite top end speed.

Skye Dawson, WR, TCU – 5’9, 183 #11
undersized, speedy slot receiver and return specialist that is very dangerous with the ball in his hands. raw track guy

Kenny Cain, ILB, TCU – 6’1, 225 #51
very strong instincts in the read/react but can be exposed in the passing game priority free agent

TCU Others to Watch:

WR Josh Boyce, Texas Christian* (5’11″, 205)downfield threat;

OG Blaize Foltz, Texas Christian (6’4″, 310)
All-Mountain West Conference First Team.

Re: Draft

Rd 1: Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M, Taylor Lewan OT Michigan, or
Dee Milliner CB Alabama.

Im tired of our OT getting slammed this year. Also our cb's look like none could start for college teams. I am content with our lb's and d-line. Both are young and have a bright future. I say give them a chance.

oh, and I would not take Tyrann Mathieu if the paid the Saints to play. He had chance after chance with LSU and failed. Screw him

What's the name of that good cornerback from Minnesota? I watched him play the other night, he's pretty good!

What do y'all think?

Here's an early mock draft. Not accurate of course as the Saints will pick 11-14. But it's something to look at. 2013 NFL Mock Drafts - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Kinda makes you happy we lost a meaningless game today.

We picking 14?

The Ansah choice intrigues me. He seems like a Spags kind of player with his size. He's still pretty new to the game, but after I did some research on him, he could be a decent pick. Still very raw, but hopefully he would have a quick learning curve. Not so much on DT's in the first round now. We got a good one last year in the third round. Our last two DT's (to my memory) that we drafted in the first round have been forgettable (Sullivan and Ellis). Just Hankins' first name being Johnathan scared me away from him.

We need an OT. Streif sucks and Chuck can't stay healthy

2013 NFL Draft Order

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Bjorn Werner! We'll have to trade up most likely but this is a guy that will be a play maker for years! I don't want to find a fixer upper, that tends to work well on offense but never seems to work out on defense. Go get me some studs and cut ties with the crap that's dragging us behind!

Mingo would be my #2,if Bjorn is gone. After watching him with the Tigers the past few years I've constantly been impressed by his energy, speed, strength, and that rare ability to be at the right place at the right time. I really hope we don't trade down. I want to go after some PROVEN defensive talent! I think the whole draft should be solely used on defense. Also if we can't get a great DE at our spot then I think we should try to get Eric Reid. We desperately need a consistent safety!
