Its way too early to be thinking about this.

I'm sure the line of scrimmage will be a major focal point of our off season. We have been so-so at the point of attack all year long.

I would think both offensive tackle positions need to be looked into, as well as linebacker and defensive line depth.

That's what being a fan is all about; you can look past games, to next years draft as early as you want, you could start contemplating freshmen college players if you really want.

It's not our job to take the planning serious, that's what they pay the players/staff millions for :bng:

I'm still seeing O-Line/Safety as our main priorities right now

Yeah, I know Armstead had a bad opening game, but he'll get some more games under his belt and then Payton & Company will have a better assessment going into the draft as to what needs they may have on the outside of the line...

There were a few plays I felt he easily handle the comp and then of course the inexperience would show on plays where Brees held the ball a little longer and Armstead got out maneuvered by the more experienced defensive end...

We've reached a detente here at Black & Gold of two camps over Harper, who's probably the most polarizing player among fans here...

But it's obvious that with the coverage breakdown by Harper on two consecutive plays on the last series, book was made to clearly target him...

Even worse was the display of missed tackles by Jenkins, especially on the second Panthers' touchdown pass, that a complimentary safety to Vacarro is really needed as well...

Have heard critics of talking about the draft during the season as a failure as a fan - my response is that always trying to discuss ways for a team to improve is no better way to demonstrate passion for a team...

Also a playmaking LB who can cover is really needed. Love Kyle Van Noy.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

Playmaker on defense. OLB stands out. A legit NFL center. Harper gone at safety is addition by subtraction. I would add a complete TE to the mix as well. Graham is a WR in a TE's body.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

I have not hid the fact that I'm a pretty big Armstead fan, but I don't think he had a bad opening game all things considered. He got beat badly 2 or 3 times, but that is to be expected from a rookie LT making his first start. Especially when said rookie LT is facing Greg Hardy. (who is a premier pass-rusher in this league)

Aside from those 2 or 3 mishaps, he played really well. He should only get better, too. I guess I would not be mad if we went LT in the first, but I think we would also be just fine if we stuck with Armstead.

Wish we could CLONE Kiko Alsonso AND Luke Kuechly in our new 34 defense we've yet to fully implement because Curtis Lofton is soooo slow that he makes even Harper look like a defensive back until a Tackle Eligible runs past him...

Shayne Skov out of Stanford would be awesome. He plays in a 3-4 too, so he fits our future plans.

This could be a pipe dream but how about the ILB CJ Mosely kid from Bama? Saw him a lot this year and he has good speed/quickness & instincts. Always had a nose for the ball & is a sound tackler.

Any thoughts?

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

I think this would be a perfect draft for the Saints:

1st - OLB Kyle Van Noy - Tremendous in pass coverage, which none of our current linebackers can say. Would instantly help our D.
2nd - FS Deone Bucannon - Malcolm Jenkins is overrated and needs replacing. This guy is a ballhawk, and he is a hard hitter too. Still has untapped potential as well.
3rd - OC Bryan Stork - De la Puente isn't bad, but he isn't good either. The center is the guy that keeps the whole OL together, so having a good one can really take the OL to the next level.
4th - CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste - The Saints take a player every year who isn't NFL ready and needs developing, but shows tons of potential. That's Jean-Baptiste. He will not be ready to contribute right away, but this could turn out to be mega steal down the road
5th - WR Jeremy Gallon - Undersized, but has that knack for creating separation and he has amazing hands. I see a lot of Lance Moore in him.
6th - Defensive tackle/Nose tackle - No player in particular here, but it would be real nice if we could take a DT/NT here and develop him.

Mosley is an absolute monster and I would be giddy if we landed him, but I would be real surprised if he is still available by the time our pick rolls around. I think Mosley is projected to go somewhere in the top 15.

I actually like most of these players you listed. In the 6th there is a NT from KY. Mister Cobbles I really liked him last season but he come down with a sickness this season and has not been the same since but if he is well and gets well he is a real player, if he checked out medically he could be a steal..Reminds me of Hampton from the Steelers in his prime, just as tough off of the point of attack and commands double teams consistantly. Might even get him as an undrafted FA. Just a thought.

Payton was on WWL last night and disagreed with Bobby about Jenkins.

Payton was praising Jenkins like he was a young Ed Reed. It wasn't just the typical "he's a heck of a player" type comments. He was gushing about MJ on and off the field.

I now have no doubt Malcolm is back next year.

And I agree with him. Jenkins gets a bad rap. He's a great player I hope we don't lose.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh on Jenkins, but I've seen him blow too many coverages to really be a fan of him. He had a nice game against Carolina the other day though, so I'll give him that.

Certainly didn't sound like it. He sounded irritated that Bobby was even hinting to the effect that Jenkins is a good player with occasional down games.

Payton politely took issue with it and then started gushing about Jenkins. It was way too much praise to simply be sticking up for one of your guys.

At least I heard it that way. It sure as hell shut Bobby up about Jenkins.

It reminded me of the Will Smith praise we hear from the front office. We found out that wasn't just yanking our chains. And trust me, I think Jenkins is our 3rd, maybe 4th best safety behind Vaccaro, Harper and even Bush.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

as the losses have showed us we must improve the defense on the edge. we are to small and lite out there.

ILB needs speed and pass coverage skills

FS needs a ball hawk.

OL is still my #1 issue

i actual would love to see the saints get a solid #2 WR for once. well actually a true #1 WR and let colston be the Z wr he is. LSU may have the answer

To address our needs we need more picks,

Love LSU, but Odell or Landry are not #1's IMO. Kelvin Benjamin would be my choice if he if he comes out.

+1. Benjamin is a freak. I think he comes out if FSU wins the title game. I read an article by Todd McShay last month projecting both Beckham and Landry as day 2 prospects.. Of course that could change depending on team need.

+1. Benjamin is a freak. inconsistent is my concerns. he will not get thrown to as much in the NFL after dropping an easy pass just ask Toon

Landry would get my pick before Benjamin or Odell.

Excellent route runner, great hands and excellent over middle. that is perfect fit for this offense,

I am not sure I would pick Landry before Benjamin, but I agree Landry would be an excellent pickup for this team.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

our system is all about route running and timing

Landry has to be one of if not the most groomed WR in college football.

Plus one thing the saints miss is a good size WR that has the right attitude to attack the middle of the field.

plus he has the hands

Ben may have the skills to make you drool but every game i have seen him in he runs sloppy routes and drops way to many catch-able passes that are not difficult.

i go with polished routes and good hands in our offense.

want a project WR that has skill to make you drool and can do more than be a WR? I point right back to my man at Stafford

Ty Montgomery, WR, Stanford, (#7), 6’2, 215, 4.42

If the saints walked away from the draft with both of these players i would be happy. ok add in some OL for happy :)

another stanford boy that you should watch is DE Josh Mauro,6'6", 282 pounds looks to be a great player in the later rounds.

I was just reading earlier today on Montgomery from Walters . From what I read he sounds like someone we definatly could use, a ton of talent. I hope we get him.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

My Wish List for the Saints (with potential FA loss or cap improvement)...

R1 DB Deonne Bucannon, Washington State, 6-1/215 (Malcolm Jenkins)

R2 LB Jeremiah Attaochu, Georgia Tech, 6-3/242 (Parys Haralson)

R3 OL Morgan Moses, Virginia, 6-5/325 (Zach Strief)

R4 RB Rajion Neal, Tennessee, 5-11/210 (Mark Ingram)

R5 C Zac Kerin, Toledo, 6-5/300 (Affordable Upgrade?)

R6 WR Jeff Janis, Saginaw Valley State, 6-3/218 (Stills could lessen Moore's Cap Hit; WR Depth)

R7 Traded for Parys Haralson to 49ers for 2014 conditional seventh round pick

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

1) Alex Mack, Center stop messing around already

this would be the best off season move the saints could make. with out a doubt the best pass blocking center in the NFL.

2) resign Zach Strief
3) Graham opppsss ran out money. so i guess Mack is out

once again i want more picks in 2 and 3 so round 1 is up for trade and i would be open to players also.

i wont start trade drafts lol

if mickey can make 1 2 and 3 work the draft would be a piece of cake.

Problem is no one in the league trades up unless its the Redskins, Raiders or Saints and the Redskins are already low on picks...

And I've rarely seen a Mickey Loomis trade that we haven't overpaid with the exception of Haralson, who may have been available after training camp cuts (I still liked the trade)...

Re: 2014 NFL Draft

teams without a 1st
St Louis gets Washington 1st round pick (Robert Griffin)
Cleveland gets Indianapolis 1st round pick (Trent Richardson)

teams with additional picks rounds 3 and 4

San Francisco gets Tennessee 3rd round pick (2013 Draft Day trade)
Minnesota gets Seattle 3rd round pick (Percy Harvin)
Cleveland gets Pittsburgh 3rd round pick (through Miami (2013 Draft Day trade)
NY Jets get Tampa Bay 3rd round pick (Darrelle Revis)

Jacksonville gets Baltimore R4 and R5 pick (Eugene Monroe trade)
Cleveland gets Indianapolis R4 pick (2013 draft day trade)

right of the bat i see Cleveland and Jacksonville as possible movers and shaker.

but we have to see how this all comes down draft day.

Any ways I see Jenkins as the void due to the cap
So some where in rounds 1 to 4 this might need to be addressed

Ed Reynolds Stanford FS

Kurtis Drummond Michigan State FS
Deone Bucannon Washington St SS
Tre Boston North Carolina FS

My late rounder goes to

Zack Kerr Delaware NT #94
6012 322 5.12

a good write up on him
