Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency
Saints signed TE Jared Cook, 32yo, 6' 5", 254lbs, signed a two (2) year deal to the team worth $15mil, avg $7.5 per annum, with $8mil guaranteed...
In contrast, TE Jesse James, 24yo, 6' 7", 260lbs, signed a 4 (4) year deal with DET worth $22.6mil, avg $5.65mil per annum, with $10.5 guaranteed... Curious to see how this comparison will pan out... |

And go back and look at Cook's production by season and see his best TD production season was last year when he was the only real receiving option on a fire-sale'd Raiders team... Also, James showed more reliability in catch-rate than Cook; it's of little consequence now, Welcome to Jared Cook, welcome to the Saints-Falcons rivalry... But I like to foot-note these moves when we circle back to Payton as a GM... |

Cook has made big plays in crucial moments. I only wonder the impact he would have made in the NFCCG vs Rams last year. We just improved on offense with the Cook signing. |

NFL.com Draft Profile - Jared Cook
Analysis Strengths Positives: Rare athlete. Reportedly ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash and posted a 39.5-inch vertical leap in 2007. Long, lanky build capable of handling additional mass without a significant loss of quickness. Good burst off the line of scrimmage to challenge the seam and can throttle down, sink his hips and create separation against even athletic defenders. Flashes natural hands for the reception. Can snatch passes outside of his frame due to his long arms and big hands. Good elusiveness after the catch and can accelerate past defenders for long gains. Good burst off the snap to get to the second level. Has the lateral agility to mirror and effectively block defenders in space. Negatives: Not necessarily the sum of his parts. Often lined up wide in the Gamecocks' offense and may struggle to acclimate to a more pro-style offense. Relies on his athleticism rather than technique to get off the line of scrimmage. Tends to freelance a bit as a route-runner. Can make the spectacular catch, but is prone to lapses in concentration. Marginal effort and effectiveness as a blocker, especially in close quarters. NFL.com Draft Profile - Jesse James Strengths Long frame with room for more muscle. Flashed some straight-line speed in space. Shows a feel for when he comes open in the seam and will turn quickly to find the throw. Can make the occasional spectacular, one-handed catch. Works to the open space against zone coverage. Not content to stand in space. Continues to maneuver around within his area to uncover and present an open target to the quarterback. Can go up and over smaller defenders in red zone as a split end. Weaknesses Sluggish off the release and runs somewhat labored and mechanical routes, getting very limited separation against man coverage. Play demeanor lacks desired fire and aggressiveness. Does just enough as a run blocker. Doesn't handle power and movement in space as well as he needs to as a blocker. Gets hung up against jams at line of scrimmage and against physical defenders within his routes. Will try to run through defender rather than adjusting route. Inconsistent adjusting to poorly thrown balls and making the tough catch... Bottom Line Big, in-line tight end with room on his frame for more muscle, but he's limited by a lack of functional athleticism and a mechanical play demeanor. James isn't a plus receiver with great hands and he lacks the quickness to consistently free himself from man coverage, so he must become a more determined run blocker in order to have a shot at starting in the NFL. |
Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency
Cook actually ran a 4.5 Combine 40 (still pretty darn impressive) so he can run, well then. Cook's catch rate last season was 25th among starting TEs. Best seasons, contract years (probably why he got short deal)...
Cook has had a couple of productive seasons vs James has, but James is still far younger and has been graded as an elite blocker, a quality we're lacking among our TEs... But if Cook even gives his non-contract year effort in production, it'll be a boost to what Ben Watson gave us last year and buys us a year to allow our rookies to improve and find an add'l TE in the draft... I'd prefered the younger James to see what Dan Campbell could develop him and with the Brees factor, but I'm just a dedicated fan and will be pulling for Cook to give us $8mil worth of production... |

Hopefully Between Coach Lieutenant Dan Campbell and Coach Whoopin' Stick Johnson, Cook's hands will be coached up to be reliable on those crucial plays... |

Brees just makes everyone better around him he demands it. Cook will get the message in camp

Saints Plan B is possibly signing Ansah (assuming his medical is a green light by Doctors mid April) but Ogbah wouldn't be a bad option either. But I do see us signing a guy post April draft. |

I'd like to add a safety (behind MW, Bell and Banjo) and cornerback.
I'm still hopeful we get Ziggy Ansah at DE. |
