I think the Saints should look at bringing in another Free Safety to challenge Marcus.

Williams took a step backwards & needs to be "pushed" + we have no veteran depth at the position.

There’s some strong speculation out there right now that we’re going after Earl Thomas and that the interest is mutual. Reportedly he was in town last weekend and told people he was going to get a deal done with us when free agency starts.

Just something to keep an eye on. Don’t shoot the messenger.

I hope not. Really would prefer signing the 26yo Honey Badger. Reason is two-fold - don't won't the Mathieu reuniting with Bruce Arians in Tampa Bay...

Same "speculation" up this way in Deathstar Nation over the last week or so. Earl enrolled his kids down in Austin, wants to be closer to home yada, yada.

Who knows.

All I know is that Earl Thomas is still ELITE at the Free Safety position. He knows how to track the football, takes away the deep pass & intercepts passes on a regular basis. Rare ability.

Can't argue with his production. I wouldn't be mad if they Saints brass are targeting him Free Agency.

I'm more concerned about the DT position this off season though.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

If there’s one thing Payton and Loomis love it’s the splashy FA signing. Everybody assumes Earl Thomas to Dallas is a foregone conclusion so swooping in and stealing the headline would turn them on so much lol. It’s totally the type of move we’d make. I agree with you though JP, Honey Badger would make way more sense.

Free agency will be fun next month.

I have a hard time arguing with just about any roster move the Saints have made over the last 3 years.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

Ah man. The articles says he’ll play the 5-technique in their 3-4 and play inside in four-man fronts. Very, very unfortunate.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

The Earl Thomas signing with the Saints is a head-scratcher because Mr. Marcus had an outstanding rookie season, average sophmore year - why spend with limited cap space and other needs on the table?

This smells more like an agent, on the Saints To Do Business With...List asked the Mickster "Mickey, could we leak that we're discussing Earl T. with you as a favor?

Sean Payton has openly said that the Saints intended to draft DT Danny Shelton back in the 2015 draft but he was snatched up one pick before us. I wonder if we get him this time around and let Tyeler Davison walk?

I certainly would.

Danny has become very good against the run and is a definite upgrade over Davison.

Realistically, do we have the cap room? McCoy was rumoured to be interested in a one-year win with Drew now deal - who's also got to be paid'; This is another whole level of compensation...

We still have @CantGuardMike's extension coming up. And we still need help on the offensive line, tight end, defensive line, underneath wide receiver, and running back...

NT contracts are kind of hard to gauge. Last year we saw Star Lotulelei sign with the Bills for $10mil/yr and Dontari Poe sign with the Panthers for $9.3mil/yr.

Likewise, NT’s like Eddie Goldman, Brandon Williams, Damon Harrison and Linval Joseph all make $10mil/yr. After all these guys it’s a steep drop off to guys making $5mil.

If Danny Shelton sees himself as a 5yr/$50 million type of guy then yeah- we have to pass.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

The Saints have roughly 12 mil. (per over the cap) in cap space right now and once the new league year starts the new cap adjustments will kick in and they will have more cap space.

DT
TE
OL (depth)
Safety

Question marks .. CB (PJ Williams), PRob is a year older coming off injury, WR (Dez, Meredith, Tre), Davison and Andrus Peat (reasonable contract).

Draft the BPA with the 2nd round pick.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

Regarding some key Saints Free Agents...

P.J. is not under contract so the only question mark with him is if he's worth bringing back. Not sure I'm rushing to bring him back. See what the market sets his value and maybe bring him back at end of Free Agency...

Meredith's 2019 cap number of $6,456,250; now, whether cut Pre/Post Jun 1 he's $2,750,000 in dead money and $3,706,250 in savings; cut him 'cause we've got better upside in Tre'quan and Kirkwood...

Dez is not under contract. He's a slow, unreliable old x-receiver at best. he's not tearing the roof off the top of defenses so I don't understand spending valuable cap space to bring him back...

Tyeler Davison is a better NT than folks want to give credit & was the point of attack for the No.1 rated rush defense. The line for him is around four years, annual cap number of 7.5 mil, 40% guaranteed...

Andrus Peat is a real tough call; Peat is way better than PFF's grading; also, remember that Peat plays hurt, latest was a week after surgery to put pins in his punch hand - something Mr. Glass would never do...

With Peat, re-work contract now to lower cap number, 70% guaranteed as incentive. But the real problem still with Peat is he's a natural, better LT than LG - this is part of the conundrum Mr. Glass creates...

We may actually see Peat's contract re-worked and then see him traded; after Ramczyk, I like Peat and Unger, but one or both may be surprises soon if their cap numbers are not re-worked...

Oh, in the by the way department, @CantGuardMike has got to be paid now before we're looking at a Cap-strangling Julio contract...

ChrisXVI 02-24-2019 08:04 AM

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Free Agency

Regarding Peat’s contract, look no further than Larry Warford for how it should look. Warford signed for 4yrs/$34mil ($8.5mil average) and his cap hit in the first year was $3.8mil.

If we keep Peat at his 5th year option salary of $9.625mil (and he certainly is more valuable than Warford having half his reps at LT) then we’re looking at something like 4yrs/$38.5mil. Structure it similarly to Warford’s where the first year cap hit is around $4mil and that will free up $5mil.

Letting Peat get elsewhere is a massive mistake

Hard for him to get into a good rhythm when the guy next to him is chopping and changing so often

Agree on P.J. Felt he performed better with a solid cast around him. Would like to have him back. He's a "nice to have"

If Meredith is healed, he's our guy. And just 26 years old, has plenty left in the tank. He made lesser QBs look very good... https://www.profootballfocus.com/new...t-third-season He's a "nice to have"

If it's not Meredith, it's Dez. Both can be very effective in the slot, overpowering smaller Nickle CBs and beating linebackers. he's a "nice to have"

Davison was nice to have. His impact in run support is above average, in pass is below average. I'm not over-paying him. He's a "Want to have"

Peat can be traded. I said it before the deadline. I don't want to hear about his injury - Armstead came back from a torn peck. Peat was a 1st round pick who's played average. I'd like to see us upgrade the spot this offseason. He's a "don't have to have"

Peat played ten days after having pins put in his hand!!! Mr. Glass hasn't played but a half season each year since he signed to the Big Mo...

But Cousin Sean addressed your comment today...
