Respectfully disagree, I believe at this point we should be loading the positions with future starters for when Brees is done. But all it seems like we are doing is drafting guys to play special teams or get cut.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Draft

The thing about the safety position is that we really only had Marcus Williams, Vonn Bell and Chris Banjo. We normally carry five. We needed depth there.

Guys taken in different rounds, different draft grades with completely different skill sets & pedigree.

Not a fair comparison.

6th & 7th are a crap shoot. Colston & Brady are 2 off the top of my head.

If you're drafting for immediate starters or key contributors after the 4th, your roster is pretty much trash.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Draft

Allow me to rephrase my earlier message - if we are just picking guys that are going to get cut because of the "roster too good" ideal, then we should have packaged those picks to move up and select players in the 3rd / 4th round that could potentially help, rather than wasting picks on late rounders that will just get cut.

I like your thinking. Only flaw is 31 other teams are looking to fleece you good and hard, lawyer style...they could have fished around but got no bites. Which reminds me of my typical fishing trips.

Edit: we did use some pick collateral to jump up in the 2nd & 4th. They did better than me, come to think of it.

The Saints traded up twice to get players(McKoy, Gardner) that will help this season.

Didn't the Saints have the best regular season record in football last year?

What am I missing here?

Hope we get Beau Benz------l, OLine Wisconsin. We'd have the most vowels for oline in the NFL. Plus he's a decent depth guy like Clapp last yr.

The lack of quality receivers doomed the offense, which still hasn't been addressed....

Well we were priced out in FA with the money getting stupid for Humphries etc. And unless you pick a WR in the first 2 rounds or at worst very early R3 they are not better than Ginn,Meredith or Smith the later two being a further year on from a bad injury and the other another year in the system. Any WR2 is going to be the fourth look behind Thomas,Kamara,Cook aswell

At this point its safe to assume that Meredith is healthy which means Kirkwood and Smith are competing for the 4th WR.

Who were we going to get where we were drafting that would have come in and made an instant impact?

Don't forget this team signed Jared Cook in FA who will be a threat in this offense.

No doubt, Jared will help us but having a guy like Parris Campbell would have made an instant impact on third downs.

Alize Mack from Notre Dame is a high risk high reward player and he's a TE and it's a great pick in round seven!

Is Arnold's roster spot in jeopardy?

Alize has good size and athleticism. Camp awaits.

Yes, I think so. Like you said, good size & athleticism. Certainly stronger than Arnold & fits more the NFL TE mold. Mack is a good fit for mismatches vs LBers but he will find it hard vs NFL Safeties. And he gets tackled way too easy...could be his college coaching (I.e. fumble prevention, clock management). He disappeared for games at a time, but that could also be in-game matchups, too.

Tough call with him. But, yes, Arnold better have gotten stronger or he should see the door if Mack flashes in camp. Good pick in the 7th.

LB Kaden Elliss, Idaho.

Watching this guy last year. Good effort guy and has some athleticism. STs guy and developmental depth.

Good pick. Needed depth at LB.

LB Laden Elliss (Luther's boy), Idaho.

Decent size, speed. Proj 6th Rd. Effort guy. STs & developmental depth. Watched a few of his games & he did stand out in the Big Sky. Like this pick, too.

Whoops. My bad for double posting.

Re: 2019 Saints NFL Draft

Interesting Eliss played some WR and TE so there’s plenty of athleticism there to harness. I like both our 7th round picks and it was a solid draft overall. We weren’t going to have a sexy draft considering our lack of picks but we hit our area of needs.

There are a whole bunch of quality WR’s going undrafted this year. Can’t wait to see who we scoop up!

I keep forgetting Year 2 of TQ Smith's development. WRs don't usually start 'getting it' right off the bat. Can't Guard Mike & Colston are the exception...beasts YR 1 and we are spoiled.

TQ will get better this year & hopefully pushes for that WR2 spot. Dude can flat out fly...game changer with a 3rd RD pick.

And I'm not sold on Meridith. He can beat soft zone but 1-on-1 no. TQ can plus bust the top off coverage. I think we did very well even without grabbing a WR.

+1 Agreed.

I still have a lot of faith in Meredith this season. He was a good player for the Bears and if he can round back into form, we'll have a great duo at WR as Mike is just a beast of a player. Tre and Kirkwood will continue to grow and improve as well.

Throw in Kamara's pass catching ability + we have added Cook at TE to the equation. That's a tall order to defend.

Had a solid pro day (IIRC Saints scouts were there), has decent 40 speed for a OLB, coaches calls him a "leader", good production in college, versatile (can play offense and defense) ...

So what's the knock on him? Scouts sleeping on the Big Sky Conference? Can he give you a Vander Esch type "effort"?

He can’t catch unless a DB just straight up blows coverage and he goes uncovered. He doesn’t win battles for the ball and has injury history. They may put him in a snap or two every now and then but he’s just not much better than a backup.
