The Saints are re-building a defense.

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton curious to see where Nnamdi Asomugha ends up
1 Attachment(s)
Count New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton as one of those within the NFL who thinks former Raiders and Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha can play at a high level in the league. More important, Payton thinks Asomugha can play at a high level with the Saints.
Payton said Monday afternoon at the NFL owners meetings at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel that he had a good visit with the former All-Pro cornerback Sunday morning before flying to Phoenix. "It happens all the time in our business where a player has success and then maybe goes through a period of time where he doesn't," Payton said. "He had company in Philadelphia in regards to the struggles they had, and for two years we didn't see the same player we saw in Oakland for so many years. But that happens all the time. I think for us, you look at the body of work and look at what motivates the player and what he's excited about. "I'm anxious to see how this unfolds." Payton said he understands Asomugha is weighing his options after visiting San Francisco and New Orleans after being released by Philadelphia last week. When asked if he has a feeling of which team Asomugha is leaning toward, Payton said, "Nothing right now. Just waiting to see." And despite the signing of former Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis in free agency last week, Payton echoed General Manager Mickey Loomis' comments from earlier Monday and said they're in the job of finding good players to improve the Saints.http://media.nola.com/saints_impact/...1008-large.jpg"It's just an opportunity for us to look closely at it," Payton said. "We'll see where it goes. He had a good visit. He came in late Saturday night and we saw him Sunday morning before we left to come here (Phoenix) and spent a couple of hours in the office with him. We're constantly paying attention to guys who can help us, regardless of the position. He's a guy that we feel like he has an opportunity to help us." Payton also praised the signing of veteran tight end Benjamin Watson to a three-year contract earlier Monday. "He's versatile," Payton said. "He's one of those players when you watch the tape: he run blocks well, he's a threat in the passing game, he plays with great leverage, he plays with great experience. He does a lot of things well. When we watched the film on him, we kept getting back to how many times we were putting a tackle in the game to report eligible. I think his signing will maybe give us more versatility." Link Back |

nfl.com on Nnamdi
We knew that free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was due to meet with his former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in New Orleans on Sunday. What we didn't know was that Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton would join the welcoming party before jetting off to the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Someone said earlier that it was just Ryan, and now this is saying the others were there, too. Maybe people can stop reporting conflicting stories and just let us know if/when he signs.

I'm preparing for the worst. Don't get me wrong this signing would be great, but I just think he's going to be too tempted by SF. SF has been so lucky recently that I feel he's going there.

So this is most likely not a possibility but what if we lose out on Nnamdi BUT the Saints enter the Revis discussion. We did just see one brother gift wrap a wide reviever to his brother.... lol

If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
1 Attachment(s)
It has become clear from the comments on NOLA.com that the majority of fans want the New Orleans Saints to sign unrestricted free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
But if the Saints do sign Asomugha, a four-time All-Pro, the team could be faced with another question: What should the Saints do with incumbent starting cornerbacks Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson? The Saints have already signed former Pittsburgh cornerback Keenan Lewis to a five-year, $26.3 million contract, and adding Asomugha could make for a crowded secondary. Although both Greer and Robinson had down seasons last year playing in former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's zone defense, the Saints' coaching staff and front-office personnel remain high on the two cornerbacks. If Asomugha is signed, the Saints have a few options. They could decide to keep all four cornerbacks along with 2012 fifth-round pick Corey White, forming a strong collection of pass defenders. They also could decide to release Greer or Robinson, but neither is a strong candidate because Greer's salary is guaranteed and Robison, who remains on his rookie contract, would offer little savings. The Saints also could decide to trade one of the two, with the 25-year-old Robinson being the most likely candidate because of his age and reasonable contract (two years remaining with caps hits of $2.2 million and $2.3 million. What should the Saints do? Leave your comments below. If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson? | NOLA.com |

Keep them all and let the football Gods sort them out!

Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
We had 4 running backs ... 5 or 6 good CB's sounds perfect to me!
|
Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
Given how our D has looked, having a couple too many quality CBs doesn't really come across as a bad thing to me
|
Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
I'd like to watch all of these guys fight it out in camp. My guess is that Keenan would lock up a starting job, while Nnamdi and Jabari would split time to keep both of the old men fresh (likely with Nnamdi being on for 60-65% of plays.) Then Corey and Johnny on back up duty all year.

Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
if we can get trade value for Robinson of a pick do it. I think we can do better. I'm worried about the lack of draft picks this year, heightened also by no compensatory picks.

Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
I would say definitely keep them all because it's a rare occasion when a team suffers no injuries to any of their CBs during a season, so quality depth is key in that position.
The only thing would naturally be if they can afford to spend so much of the cap on one position - wink, wink Mr. Brees - but if Asomugha comes cheap then they can probably afford it, if not Greer is on the bubble. Quote:
Johnny Patrick was placed on waivers and was picked up by the Chargers, so he hasn't been with the Saints for a while now. |
Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
I believe we should try Roman Harper at an OLB position nd maybe give Jabari Greer or Patrick Robinson a try at Safety , they can't be any worst then Harper

Re: If the New Orleans Saints sign Nnamdi Asomugha what should they do with Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson?
I also think the team should hold on to all of those guys and let them fight it out in training camp. With the physicality of the sport, injuries happen and at least Robinson and Greer know the surroundings. You would have to think that it would be Lewis and Nnamdi's jobs to lose.
If a trade presents itself, and we can acquire more picks or a player that can help immediately, I can't see this being a bad thing either. |

Why not

If we sign Asomugha, we let him and Lewis start. Jabari Greer is the Nickel. We bring in Robinson to on Dime packages or when Greer needs a break. Unlike what we're used to, Asomugha is always healthy and is in excellent condition. I'm trying to tell the non-believers, don't fall victim to the last two years in Philadelphia. The same people that say, "It was just the scheme," when talking about Greer and Robinson's performance won't give Nnamdi the same look over. This guy is an elite man to man defender. Just like Robinson and Greer are much better suited to man. Playing people out of position and out of scheme is never the right thing to do. It wastes talent. |

there going to keep all of them this year and maybe next year Greer will be gone. You can never have to many DB's But I do think Corey White will see a lot of playing time this year.
