Re: Cards, Texans permitted to interview Sean Payton
I heard them saying it on ESPN that the teams being granted permission agreed with the Saints on proximity value. Hopefully they’re right.

This article by Sigler contains what I see as more realistic estimates on the compensation and his reasoning is dead on. So what would a trade with them look like? New Orleans will get some compensation back once Payton has chosen his next team, and they reportedly want a first round pick and additional draft assets as part of that deal (remember, players can’t be involved in coach trades). That’s led to plenty of speculation and daydreaming about the Saints getting a king’s ransom in return, so here’s a proposal for each team. With apologies to fans thinking big about a Jon Gruden-style return (two first round picks, two second round picks, and his $8 million in remaining salary), this situation is different, and even though Payton should be valued at the same level, New Orleans shouldn’t anticipate something that lofty. There hasn’t been a comparable trade in 20 years, and it’s not like the Saints have a lot of leverage here. If Payton only okays one team, they’ll have to take that offer. That also takes the second- and third-overall picks in the 2023 draft off the board. Crazy things have happened before in the NFL, but it would be wild to see either of those picks (owned by Houston and Arizona, respectively) go to New Orleans. For one thing, Payton is going to want to have those picks in his own pocket once he’s hired as head coach. Sorry if that feels like being dunked in cold water, but it’s better to keep expectations grounded in hopes of being surprised than to set them too high and end up being disappointed. Denver Broncos Broncos get: Sean Payton Saints get: 2023 first round pick (No. 29) 2023 third round pick (No. 68) 2024 second round pick Houston Texans Texans get: Sean Payton Saints get: 2023 first round pick (No. 12) 2023 fourth round pick (No. 103) 2024 fourth round pick Arizona Cardinals Cardinals get: Sean Payton 2023 fourth round pick (No. 114) Saints get: 2023 second round pick (No. 34) 2023 fourth round pick (No. 104) 2024 first round pick You can read more detail here ... |

Re: Cards, Texans permitted to interview Sean Payton
Opinion.
I generally like Sigler's writing but has no more insight than any of us. As with Desaun Watson, some team can come out of left field at the last minute and blow all other offers away. Look, we all get SP has to "want" to accept that job, but again - so much happens behind the scenes, it's just silly to think that a lesser offer is more realistic. |

Can you explain what you mean by "lesser offer"? Do you mean lesser than what the fans are hoping for, lesser than what was given for Gruden, or lesser than another franchise's offer for Payton's rights? Or something else entirely different. I'm honestly not sure what you meant by that. The Texans can offer us the 2023 #2 overall and their 1st in 2024, while the Cardinals can offer up the #3 overall and their 2024 1st. But if Payton only wants to accept the Denver job or go back to FOX and all the Broncos are willing to give up is what Sigler suggested then the Saints have no recourse other than accept it or refuse to give up his rights at all. The Broncos' "lesser offer" is better than nothing at all and should still come in handy. |

Re: Cards, Texans permitted to interview Sean Payton
I believe I've said the same here, as well.
Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely love it if we were to get either one of the #2 or #3 picks in this year's draft, but I see no way in Hell that happens especially when the best Denver can offer is the 49er's first way down at the end of the round. |
