Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

Sheldon Richardson can be an excellent "five" technique defensive tackle - that would be a 3-4 Defensive End...

He had a great year on a Missouri team that struggled in its first year in the SEC...

Have two view points on him:

Did he have a great year, stats at the expense of other defenders?

Defensive Lineman also "block", occupy, control point of attack of offensive lineman so linebackers, safeties can make counter plays (i.e. tackles, blitzs, stunts, sacks, forced fumbles); some defenders (i.e. Warren Sapp) were quick smaller big men who made a career of shooting gaps and hoping to anticipate correctly; now guess what happened when they were wrong - usually their teammates got "blasted" and runs like Jamal Lewis going up the one hole for a 80 yard sprint across the goal line were the result...

Second, does he have the size to secure his "end" of the line?

His motor and quickness or undeniable; but can he carry the bulk and display the strength to disrupt, alter, shift what an offense is trying to do...

Personally, I prefer him to Dion or even Iggy...

Our 15th pick in the first round is valued at 1050 points and the value of the Bengals second rounders are 530 and 370 points. Their 5th rounder is valued at 29 points for a total of 929 points. I think we can get a better deal from the Bengals. But under your scenario, here are my picks:
2(5) CB David Amerson or WR Justin Hunter
2(21) DL Jesse Williams
3(13) OLB Jamie Collins
4(16) OL Barrett Jones
5(8) OT Chris Faulk
5(16) S TJ McDonald
5(23) NT TJ Barnes
6(15) TE Joseph Fauria

Iggy scares the heck of me more than any of them. talk about bust or boom. he gets my crown for the 2013 NFL Draft followed closely by Mingo

Dion if i had to draft on hype he gets the pick.

I think Jesse Williams is an important piece to our puzzle. I'd move him up to 2(5) if I didn't think he'd be there. You're probably right about his availability but I was basing it off of a mock draft from walterfootball that had him falling to 2(31). Then Collins, Jones, and Faulk would get moved up and we'd take CB Tharold Simon at 5(8). I know some people don't have the highest opinion of him, but it's hard to split hairs in the fifth round.

Well, not really...the bump is cornerback is probably due to the fumbled attempt to sign Asomugha...

Nearly 44% see the DLine as the biggest need...

Outside Linebacker is at another 20%...

Though there are different view points on how to solve the problem, the Pass Rush is Mission Critical for the Saints...

I just voted for the OT because I usually pull for the under dog. The more I'm thinking about our defense, the better I'm feeling about it.

Dammit, missed the safety.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft - Saints Big Board

My worry is still the pass rush...

I just don't see some of these smallish defensive ends contributing, making the team for that matter...

We get a good solid pass rush, we buy some time to get the safeties replaced...

A good portion of those votes were cast before the switch to 3-4, so they're really not that representative - and there's also the error of listing DE twice without the option for a DT.

I know I voted DE, although I would've wanted to vote DT and this was based on the 4-3 alignment.

In the CBS mock draft consisting of Rob Rang, Dane Brugler, Pat Kirwan, and Pete Prisco, the earliest they have Bjoern Werner (Kirwan's pick) picked is at #17 by the Steelers. Is there something I'm missing? I thought that Werner was regarded as the one the safest picks in this draft.

I disagree. The only reason why he's dropping is because of his physical traits. On film against the top level of collegiate competition, he was outstanding. I'd take him any day all day against a guy who a shoddy tract record against mediocre competition. For guys like Moore, you can take that 40 time and throw it out the window.

Too much is put in stock of these guys personal workouts. Never in their life in football are they going against no one. While it's great for eye candy stats, for me, I'm more concerned and I put more importance on what these guys have done on the football field.

Saints Trade Back Scenario

01 (Trade Down)

01 (20-25) Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia; Height: 6-3. Weight: 236; Estimated 40 - 4.6.

Excellent all-around athlete; Playmaker, Production with Sacks, Pass Defensed, Int; Character Issues - suspended four games for positive pi$$ test...

Why he'll be drafted by Saints? Wouldn't be surprised if the interview of Todd Grantham is to get more insight into reasons behind Ogletree's suspension...

02 Goodelled

02 (52-57) David Amerson, CB, NC State; Height: 6-2. Weight: 194; Estimated 40 - 4.4.

Led nation as sophomore with thirteen (13) interceptions; can move to Safety (position he was recruited for out of High School; will match up well against big, physical NFL receivers; had disappointing Junior Year which will cause him to fall to second round...

Why Saints should draft him? The Saints have to get as physical with receivers as the new NFL passing defense rules will allow which mean physical engagement at the LOS and reducing the passing windows quarterbacks may throw over smaller DBs to WRs...

03 David Quessenberry, OT, San Jose State; Height: 6-5. Weight: 295; Estimated 40 - 5.1.

Rising prospect; Smaller school product that took advantage of his invite at the Senior Bowl and really held his own against some very polished pass rushers.

Why the Saints will draft him? The Saints are different than most teams in that they commit their resources (salary cap) to their interior line; but the tackle play has been less than stellar and rumor is that Bushrod and the Saints will be far apart on contract expectations; a young, quicker, hungrier Tackle may be the ticket to energize what has been one of the best units in the league...

04 Kwame Geathers, NT, Georgia; Height: 6-6. Weight: 355; Estimated 40 - 5.2.

Big Strong Junior Early Entry from Georgia; Good Bloodlines; Excellent Prospect who'll be available in mid rounds as he still needs some coaching...

Why Saints Should Draft Him? This is Jumpy Geathers' Nephew!

05 Devin Taylor, DE, South Carolina; Height: 6-7. Weight: 275; Estimated 40 - 4.8.

Another player who's stat lines declined this year after being named First Team All-SEC last season; his big frame offers some unique matchups, however he'll have to match up against slower right tackles; but in a 3-4, his focus will be more on occupying lineman allowing the linebackers to attack...

Why the Saints will draft him? He's exactly the type of value the Saints always seem to find in the mid-rounds; and with plenty of defensive ends available the past two season, he should be available...

06 Ryan Griffin, QB, Tulane; Height: 6-5. Weight: 206; Estimated 40 - 4.9.

Pedestrian numbers for a typically disappointing Tulane Squad this past season- 9GS, 2771 PaYd, PaCp 62.2, 19 PaTD, 11 Int; so what's the big deal? He shows up at the Texas v. The World Game and surrounded with comparable talent to the other signal callers he blows it outta there with Scouts scrambling moving this All-Academic Signal Caller up draft boards...

Why the Saints Will Draft Him? Curtis Johnson, former Saints WR Coach, is the new Tulane Head Coach and will give Sean Payton a no-nonsense, first-hand scouting report that will sneak the Saints an excellent prospect at QB...

07 Cody Davis, SS, Texas Tech; Height: 6-2. Weight: 205; Estimated 40 - 4.5.

Four year starter and excellent tackler and hitter; should offer solid depth and an excellent special teams player...

Why the Saints should draft him? He's just the type of player Sean Payton likes - scrappy, tenacious, overlooked; and the Saints special teams play costs them no less than two games this past season...

Wanted to Look Back and See and compare going to the week of the draft...

First, actually thought ReRun and Duane-wayne could talk Rodge into giving us back our second rounder - d'oh!

Second, surprised that several on list are still there, even if some are in different spots...

Third, even if it is a seventh rounder - am really p/o how poorly the Saints front office values, manages draft picks...

Finally, if we stay in the first round, I don't want to risk not drafting Ogletree; if we can gain two second rounders from either Cincy or Miami, then I'm fine with letting geaux the first rounder, but I'd just as soon sit at fifteen and put that Black and Gold Jersey on Ogletree...

Now, I'd love to get creative and do to the Jets what their trying to do to the Bucs trade for a second, sixth round pick(s) for Ivory, Harper...

Totally agree and get your point on the film and game play - but that's also my point, and I'll clarify...

When a player is balling at a very high level, above his athleticism, at the college level in big games- while I appreciate hard play as much as anyone - NFL Scouts, Coaches have to ask "Can this guy do this every down, where talent is deep on every roster?"

Think on the Reggie Bush Lesson - in college, Reggie had big games against big talent, but in the NFL everyone's big and as fast, including the waterboys - and Reggie stubbornly struggled to adjust his game...

You really have to consider the ceilings of these guys when drafting and that's why I'd question their game in the NFL...

Pretty much all the pre-draft rankings I've seen have listed Johnson as the #3 OT before Fluker, but this mock has Fluker going #21 and Johnson #27.

What am I missing here?!

I have to believe that if Johnson is available at #15, and there are no big trade down offers; the Saints will pick him.

Probably because Johnson can play LT and RT very well, but Fluker may be an elite RT. If a team is looking for strictly a RT, Fluker's the man.

But do you think Johnson will drop as far down as the Texans?
