Well, Jordan looked better from a 5-tech, where he started closer to the quarterback and used rip/swim power moves to get immediate "sudden" pressure on the passer, from the 9-tech he lacks the speed to be the main source of pressure and actually looks like Zach Strief out in space...

Rankins is a true 3-tech; see him starting in the base 4-3 packages as the 3/4-tech and being moved around to get one-on-one matchups with FA Fairley coming in as a 3-tech on obvious passing subs; should Rankins' lack of size to lock down his area be an issue as it was with Sed Ellis, the Saints Draft Team will have overreached, again; and coaches will be busy finding a balance of rotating Rankins and Fairley to their strengths...

Assuming Onyemata progresses and is coached up enough to make the roster, fans will need to temper expectations for a couple of seasons as this man is a real raw prospect; I'd expect to see him initially on short-yardage packages and possibly occasionally to spell a starter should we have control (significant lead) in a game; if Onyemata progresses to play significantly in this year or even early next; it'll be lagniappe for the team and a win for the Saints draft team...

Yeah, Smash, we should see some nice competition among the defensive backs, running backs, and offensive line...

One UDRFA acquisition to keep an eye on is FS Trae Elston outta Ole Miss; if Saints coaching gives him half a chance, he'll be a good one; personally, thought he was every bit as good as Vonn Bell; but with the Cap Money committed to Byrd and the high pick committed to Bell, his chances are really tough...

Know many are excited about getting Landon Turner, a projected second/third round pick very late in the draft season; but two UDRFA I really like are BYU's Ryker Mathews and A&M's Joe Cheek; Mathews reminds me alot of Zach Strief, his fate can be tied to the Saints if Strief makes the final roster, likely, and Peat moves into guard, 50/50; Joseph Cheek is interesting as he's like a lighter Carl Nicks with similar athletic builds; Cheek's a smart guy who should pick up things quick, but he'll have to pick bulk quickly without a dropoff in movement, skill and Cheek could use a little more 'violence' to his game...

Dillon Lee is a real wild card and the guy I'm locking in on this offseason...

Alot of good talent is either not going to get used and result in trade or out and out release for not being a good fit for what Payton will let D.A. install...

Running backs are a dime a dozen in the Saints' scheme unless your name is Ingram; all offer impressive talents; one dropped outlet pass will lead to a solid No.2 RB on any NFL roster getting released...

Wonder if there's a chance we could get back that 2017 fifth round pick for Jairus Byrd? or get a fourth round pick for C.J. Spiller?

FS Trae Elston was a productive player and was always in the middle of everything. I like the DBs the saints have brought in as UDFA.

I wouldn't sleep on Stupar or Ediboli and I'll add Davidson with them. Ascending players with really good upside. I'm curious to see how Anthony does as an OLB.

I spent the past few days looking at 2017 mock draft and the ones that actually predict a seasons standings. Guess what, almost all of them have us pretty much back in the top 10. Last place in south.

So if you believe the media scouts there is no reason getting hyped or excited by any of our additions.

Me i say they are all overrated. I can not wait to see what happens with fat boy gone.

Really don't like that the Saints used two picks to get DT David Onyemata when there was better, more developed tackles available into the fifth round of the draft...

We caught a break with the UDRFA class with the interior offensive line and with free safety...

We still could use another long defensive end and another interior defensive lineman...

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

Jenkins is a strong candidate for two reasons; one, Payton really wanted to install a 3-4 front and Jenkins, pardon the pun, was a big part of that plan...

Don't think you hang it all on Jenkins, Rob Ryan lacked the organizational skills to install and run the defense, now you have Dennis Allen who's a 4-3 system guy and Jenkins is a poor fit and D.A. hasn't shown the creativeness to put together a plan with what he has, rather going out looking for pieces...

I can see the Saints trying to trade Spiller and possibly even Byrd before outright releasing them...

Should Keenan Lewis age, injuries continue to be an issue throughout offseason and training camp, Westbank could also be expendable if last seasons' draft picks progress...

Actual if Jenkins has any hope of getting his career back on track it is in a 43. The 34 was joke once teams scout him up. He spent his whole time getting blocked into the concession stands. Foe a guy that size it is amazing how he got rage dolled and pancaked time and time again. He still has the same knock against him as when he came out of college. Poor game strength. I call it lazy. DA did a great job IMO. he along cost us from being in the top ten in the draft.

Well, the Saints did have him lose alot of bulk last season; it was yet another bad decision by the Saints to expend two draft picks to move up and grab a player that the Saints "had information was about to be taken", which is becoming a common theme for this front office...

Well some of those contracts have already been paid, and we'd be on the hook this season for the cap numbers...so a team, say a contender, in need of a RB or FS could be willing to acquire either for a Day 3 pick...

The New Orleans Saints will hold a rookie minicamp May 13-15 at the team practice facility in Metairie, the NFL announced Thursday.

The minicamp will be the first look at first-round drafted defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and four other players selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, along with the 19 players signed as undrafted free agents.

The league had previously announced dates for OTA offseason workouts and the mandatory minicamp.

The Saints will hold OTA workouts May 24-26, May 31-June 2 and June 6-9, with the mandatory minicamp June 14-16.

The Saints began Phase 2 of the offseason workout program Monday. Phase 2 can include on-field workouts, individual player instruction and drills. Phase 1 began April 18 and could consist only of strength and conditioning activities.

Phase 3 of the offseason program consists of the 10 OTA workouts. None of those sessions will be open to the public, although handful will be open to media.

Source: NOLA.com

Note(s):
  • Saints will have to get down to ninety (90) players.
  • Saints may still bring in player(s) for tryouts.
  • Saints still have to sign their draft selections.

By all accounts Cameron Jordan is staying at weak side DE. We all kinda assumed he'd move back to the strong side but I haven't gotten that indication.

I'll try to find the link later but, prior to the draft in a Nola.com story, Payton had mentioned moving Kikaha back to a pure rusher role and getting Cam opposite him; that was my reference...

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

Advocate Blog Network: New Orleans Saints release three to make room for rookies

The New Orleans Saints have released fullback Toben Opurum, running back Vick Ballard and defensive end Phillip Hunt in order to get down to the NFL’s 90-man roster limit.

New Orleans drafted five players and added 19 undrafted free agents, bringing the total roster numbers to 93 and forcing three cuts.

Opurum, a fourth-year player out of Kansas, spent most of the season on the practice squad in 2015, but he was active for two games and played on special teams.

Hunt, a pass rusher who made his name in the CFL, also had a brief cameo on the Saints’ 53-man roster, although he did not play in any games.

Ballard, a former Indianapolis Colt, was hoping for a shot to prove himself, but the Saints have a loaded backfield that got even more crowded when New Orleans drafted rookie Daniel Lasco in the seventh round.

Note: The Saints will have to release another player when DT David Onyemata is signed to be within the 90-man player limit.

Note: Toben Opurum was claimed off waivers by the Broncos; Best Wishes!

4 WR

Michael Thomas, Brandon Coleman
Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead

Question is who will step up
Kyle Prater
Jared Dangerfield
Jordan Williams
Shane Wynn
Reggie Bell
R.J. Harris

I have not heard much from SP about any of them. i guess OTAs will start the love affair.

KP had all of the tools coming out of high school & I thought he would be great at USC. Hoping for the best at camp for him.

From last year's group, I really liked Kyle Prater, big guy, decent hands, he was dealing with nagging injury that slowed his progress; hoping he bounces back with a good offseason and training camp and makes this team...

R.J. Harris came in really raw; I'd be interested to see how he's progressed since last year's appearance...

Jordan Williams is also interesting, but I'd be more interested if he asks the equipment manager to put his entire name (Jordan Williams-Lambert) on the back of his jersey; as an UDRFA, I wouldn't push it...

Mathews could be the next to follow in their footsteps.

I am going out on the limb early this year.

Avery Young maybe the injury role that pays of huge. Landon Turner maybe the hyped signing

But

Ryker Mathews Is the one I am watching out the corner of my eye. He may get a shot at OT but inside is were I think he will make his living. The knock about quickness off the snap "is lacking" is something I question and look at coaching as a possible issue. worth keeping an on.

I really like this pick up. blue collar, lunch, pail toting, pancake making line man, they make me swoon.

Between these three I feel much better about the possible future of the depth at OG.

Can we just trade Peat? We have a ton of guard options now and Peat isn't gonna beat out Strief. I still believe the team didn't really want Peat... They just got stuck.
