Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

Fansided: 5 Saints Who Will Challenge Keenan Lewis for the #2 CB Spot

As the New Orleans Saints head towards OTA’s starting this Tuesday, we likely we see the beginnings of what promises to be a fierce battle to be the Saints #2 outside boundary cornerback opposite of the team’s “lockdown” #1 outside boundary CB, Delvin Breaux.

At the moment, it’s presumed that the #2 CB spot is veteran Keenan Lewis’ to lose.

By all accounts, Lewis is on schedule and possibly ahead of schedule with the rehab of his left knee, the same knee that he tore the MCL (medial collateral ligament) against the Washington Redskins in Week #10 that ended his 2015 season.

But that’s not a given at this point, when one considers that Lewis has actually undergone a total of 3 surgeries in less than one full calendar year (yes, THREE).

That means that these next few months of competition in OTA’s and Training Camp will ultimately determine whether or not Lewis — who recently turned 30 — is up to the task of re-claiming his spot.

That will leave the door open for several players to vie for that spot, and it’s with that in mind that this evening, we’re taking a quick look at a few of the young men who will presumably will have the BEST CHANCE at challenging Lewis for that #2 CB spot over the course of the next several months — including what the percentage of chances are of each one them beating him out.

Starting with this young man…..

JP you wild! Rankins was probably studying, preparing, working on his rip move :p. Seriously speaking, I'm not sure how they came about selecting rookies for the photo but at first glance, there were a lot of offensive players in this shoot.

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

Saints DE Bobby Richardson in For the Fight of His Life

Richardson overcame the odds last season to not only make the Saints final roster after going undrafted out of Indiana University, but to become the starter for the Saints at the designated rush defensive end opposite of Cam Jordan — also known as the 7-Technique.

But he faces the enormous task of holding off teammate and Saints 2nd year defensive end / outside linebacker Hau’oli Kikaha, whom the Saints plan on moving to that spot after having him at the strongside / “Sam” linebacker position at the end of last year.

The move of Kikaha to the 7-Technique is seen as beneficial by the Saints, since Kikaha is noted for having led the NCAA in sacks two years ago at that very same position.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Saints could also be looking at putting two other players in the line-up at times at the 7-Technique position as well, with 2nd year defensive end / outside linebacker Davis Tull (who like Kikaha has played both rush end and linebacker) and rookie 4th Round pick David Onyemeta — who was drafted as a defensive tackle but whom the Saints will give an extensive look at the defensive end position.

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

Hau'oli Kikaha now officially at 'edge' for New Orleans Saints | NOLA.com

Hau'oli Kikaha began 2015 as a strong-side linebacker for the New Orleans Saints.

He said he'll start his second year in the NFL as an edge rusher in base packages, confirming speculation about his new role that grew out of earlier comments from coach Sean Payton.

"I play an edge person -- whatever you want to call it," Kikaha said Thursday. "Jack, Buck, weak end. Sometimes a strong end. I'm not playing SAM (strong-side linebacker) anymore. It's a little bit different. It's fun. It's definitely fun."

Kikaha worked in the edge role during Thursday's organized team activity session that was open to the media.

Cam Jordan, who didn't participate, is expected to shift from Jack to strong-side end in the reconfigured defense.

In the base defense, John Jenkins is the top option at nose tackle, with rookie Sheldon Rankins battling veteran Nick Fairley for three-technique defensive tackle.

Kasim Edebali, who is also likely to push Kikaha at the Jack spot and provide depth in pass-rushing situations, worked on the sidelines with an athletic trainer and did not participate Thursday. Other options at the position could be Davis Tull and Obum Gwacham, who played both weak- and strong-side end on Thursday.

The 4-3 Under was our base defense in training camp last year. It doesn't really matter since only like 30% of our plays will be in our base defense.

Well, hopefully we're in it more as it'll be more effective with the new talent we have in the defensive front seven...

There's alot of chatter also about the 3-safety formation with Vonn Bell in with Kenny V and Erik Harris while Byrd's out...

It sounds like Vacarro and Harris can both play that Moneybacker position which is great because if Vacarro gets injured we don't have to throw out those 3 safety sets.

Of the 90 players on the roster, 22 were originally acquired through the NFL Draft. That's down from 24 a year ago. One-third of the players were acquired as undrafted free agents. That figure includes rookies, but also veteran players like cornerback Brian Dixon, edge rusher Kasim Edebali and guard Tim Lelito.

Saints’ P.J. Williams eager to show his skills after injury | The New Orleans Advocate — New Orleans, Louisiana

Looking forward to watching PJ in camp.

Those three successive concessions for Swann have me worried for him...

Speaking of Swann, wonder if he wouldn't make a better safety?

Are De’Vante Harris and/or Jimmy Pruitt talented enough to make this roster?

I like BD as a gunner (straight line speed to cover punts is above avg) however has appeared lost too much in coverage when slotted at corner. Swann has the swagger, however he simply can't stay healthy. Those concussions are happening far too often. Can't trust him.

Attend a TON of HS games here in the Metroplex.. .De'Vante stood out at Mesquite (Horn) however I always would say "damn he is feisty but so small". Didn't really follow him at TAM. Let's see what he does in camp.

Jimmy P - I think his best shot at a roster spot is S/T. Really good open field tackler with range. Maybe practice squad & coach him up?

But the simple answer to your question .. yes, these kids are talented enough to earn roster spots but I'll reserve judgment until they put the pads on :p.

From our previous starters and key acquisitions:

DE Cameron Jordan
DE Bobby Richardson
DE David Onyemata
NT John Jenkins
NT Tyeler Davison
DT Nick Fairley
DT Sheldon Rankins
LEO Hau'oli Kikaha
LEO Davis Tull
LEO Kasim Edebali
LEO Obum Gwacham

With eight (8) maybe nine (9) defensive line spots available, can see a couple of good players not making this team...

Then, you could have one of these guys flash in training camp:

NT Ashaad Mabry
DE Mitchell Loewen
DL D.J. Pettway

Should be interesting...

JP - keep that lazy eye on A Mabry. He could be a factor at NT (1 -tech) rotation.
