Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
If you haven't heard, our fourth round selection which cost two draft picks to acquire that pick, DL David Onyemata, Manitoba (Canada) was also drafted by the Saskatchewan RoughRiders of the CFL (Canadian Football League) in the fourth round; he was projected the top of his CFL class...
Consider this possibility - suppose he chose to play for Saskatchewan offered him more money than what is allotted for his draft selection in accordance with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement Rookie Pool? Well, went to OverTheCap.com and looked up the slotted contract for pick #120.* The contract has a total value of $2,882,334usd with a signing bonus of $542,344usd and contract values of sequential order of $585,586usd (2016), $675,586usd (2017), $765,586usd (2018), and $855,586usd (2019)... Judging from what CFL players make these days (Football is not their day jobs - like the good ole days of our grandfathers), and add in the Canadian socialist income tax and healthcare system, I wouldn't consider the CFL draft selection a threat... There's probably some work visas that are being expedited through Immigration and the US State Department and that's what is holding up the contract... And there may be some US Labor/Immigration Law, Nigerian Labor/Immigration Law and Canadian Labor/Immigration Law adaptations to the contract that have to be wrangled out; leave it to Sean Payton to turn in a homework assignment to p*ss off the teacher... * Rookie Draft Pool- Over the Cap (Hover over Pick No.120 (Texans Row, but it'll show Saints) for contract value |

But, eventually Strief's age will cause the ineveitable veteran crash and I'd rather just slide Peat over in an easier transition and plug in a developed guard, perhaps Landon Turner, perhaps a draft pick or FA next season... It makes no sense to trade Peat now except for an elite defensive front seven prospect or wide receiver and there're none that'd give us the value that we'd send in Peat for the next three years... |

Nola.com - With Rookie Minicamp Over, New Orleans Saints Begin Making Roster Moves
By Katherine Terrell, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Email the author | Follow on Twitter on May 15, 2016 at 2:11 PM, updated May 15, 2016 at 5:42 PM The New Orleans Saints began making roster moves with rookie minicamp in the books on Sunday. It could be a busy few days. Last year the Saints cut veteran kicker Shayne Graham after a successful tryout by Zach Hocker. Here's a running list of Sunday's moves as they come out. It's likely the Saints will not release a full list of moves until Monday. 2:15 p.m.: The Saints signed offensive tackle Tyrus Thompson, according to his agent. Thompson was one of several veterans in for a tryout during the weekend. Thompson, 24, was a 2015 sixth round pick by the Vikings who spent time with the Jaguars and Lions. 4:59 p.m.: Receiver Jacob Lampman announced on Twitter that he was signing with the Saints. Lampman played at Ferris State in Michigan, where he caught 52 passes for 731 yards and eight touchdowns in his senior season. The East Lansing native was listed at 6 feet tall and 205 pounds in college. 5:20 p.m.: The Saints have signed Air Force tight end/long snapper Garrett Griffin, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle. The Saints must release at least two players to make room on the roster for the newcomers. The corresponding moves are unknown. Source: Complete Article |

Eyes should be on McMahon and his special teams this season. This is where I hope Stupar, Mauti & rookie Vonn Bell initially make their presence felt. I wouldn't even be opposed to putting Kenny V on kick offs. All hands on deck.
Consistently ranking near the bottom of the league just isn't good enough at this level. |

There goes Josh Scobee. Maybe Payton liked what he saw from Pistelli or Connor Barth during mini camp. It doesn't matter... Payton will pick the wrong guy anyway.

My dark horse this camp will be 96 - Ashaad Mabry. I really expect him to surprise & impress coaches, earning a spot in the DT rotation. Odd man out will be Jenkins. Unless he (JJ) balls out of control at TC, I think he is sent packing. |

Mixed bag on Jenkins; it's hard to expect consistency from a guy when his role, responsibilities change season to season... Brought in with two draft picks to be a "0" gap nose tackle for a 3-4 defense that never materialized... He had a torn bicep during the offseason training program going into the second year... Last year he was asked and slimmed down for some hybrid 3-tech role in a Ryan-Allen compromise defense (Ryan got all the blame, but shouldn't have been two coordinators)... Regardless, Big John has got to man up and make the most of it; if he's not happy with the direction, he can leave via free agency and show he made a great effort... |

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
Three observations as this year's roster has evolved:
One, Saints FO is going to throw as many linebackers against the wall till something sticks - there will be opportunity... Two, make no mistake, we will be a true 4-3 defense when we come out of training camp - no matter the costs... Three, at some point there will be some reaching out to move quality talent for needs - who handles these moves? |

New Orleans Saints to sign kicker Connor Barth, ESPN reports | NOLA.com
The New Orleans Saints are signing former Buccaneers kicker Connor Barth following his tryout at rookie minicamp, according to ESPN... Barth was released by the Buccaneers after they traded up in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Roberto Aguayo in the second round. Barth, 30, is a 8-year veteran who was with the Buccaneers from 2009-15. He has made 139-of-164 career kickers (84.8 percent), but made only 23-of-28 kicks last season and missed a PAT. All of his missed kicks were 40 yards or longer... |

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
4 possible June 1 cuts for Saints - Today's Pigskin
For the New Orleans Saints, the moves they make before June 1 could be massively important for them. Why? Mainly because of the fact that they are currently over the salary cap by $495,969. This means that they’ll likely be pretty active and searching to try to make a few moves to free up cap space. With that said, we’ll jump into it and take a look at four players who the Saints may choose to part ways with before June 1 in order to get things in order with their cap space... John Jenkins...releasing Jenkins will fee up more than $1.6 million in cap space, while resulting in just $141,890 in dead money... Kai Forbath...made nine of his 13 field goal attempts, while going 33 of 34 on extra points...(his) release before June 1 would free up $600k in cap space, while leaving the team with only $80k in dead money... Michael Mauti...releasing him will free up $675k in salary cap, and won’t cost the team a single thing... Tony Carter...Releasing him frees up $600k in cap space and doesn’t cost the team a thing...see this happen from time to time where a player just doesn’t stick with a team, and soon after being signed, gets released... and throughout Carter’s entire seven-year career, he’s played in 42 games and totaled just 49 combined tackles and three interceptions... All statistics on snap percentages from Football Outsiders All salary cap information courtesy of Over The Cap |
Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
I'd rather release Jairus Byrd than Michael Mauti
At least Mauti made at least one memorable play last season with that blocked punt, can't for the life of me think of anything good about Jairus Byrd. |
