Whoa! Coach Payton doesn't put up with any slackers, especially those with mullets!

Saw that too JP.

I think it's a bit early to make a lot out of it since it's still "unofficial". Still a lot of moving parts, giving guys xtra reps & see where these young rookies stand.

From what I've seen and read thus far in camp ... I'd leap frog TommyLee over Brandon Coleman.

Rule change could add strategy to bringing a player back from IR

A rule change passed Wednesday morning basically eliminates the injured reserve – desginated for return list but does not eliminate the rule allowing one player per team, per season to return to action from the injured reserve list.

Now, teams can simply choose a player who’s been on injured reserve for at least six weeks and activate him once he’s healthy enough to play again.

Still only one player per season may be activated from injured reserve, but the team does not need to designate that player when he’s placed on IR. In the past, if a player was hurt in the preseason or early in the regular season, teams would have decide whether to use the return designation — or, in some cases, whether to place the player on IR at all until it had a clear timetable for a potential return.

Now, teams could potentially use some strategy and gamesmanship in deciding which injured player could make a late-season comeback. Decisions could be made based on roster strength and depth, or in the case of multiple players being potentially eligible to return, waiting until the last minute before a weekly activation deadline could keep opponents guesssing. Under the old rule, the player with the IR-return designation was out at least six weeks before returning to practice and eight before he could return to game action.

The new rule was proposed by the Buffalo Bills. The original designated for return rule was passed in 2012; prior to then, any player placed on injured reserve would miss the rest of the season.

What to do with CB Keenan Lewis?

A potentially ugly battle looms with Westbank and agent as Lewis has stated, publically, he doesn't want to go to Injured Reserve - yet he's unable to play, perform...

Lewis might be seen as an obvious candidate to go on IR, then return mid-season once his groin injury sufficiently recovered...

The knee injury suffered by Hau'oli Kikaha has been considered by most reports to be a season-ending injury (if not worse); still, the Saints have been playing a little gamemanship with his PUP roster designation...

Now with the development of the Sheldon Rankins lower leg fracture, likely back in approximately eight weeks, there will now be pressure to decide now on a plan for whether to keep a roster spot for Keenan Lewis...

Then there's the outstanding development, discovery of not one, but two rookie undrafted free agents in Da'Vante Harris and Ken Crawley...

Nevermind the fortunate late free agent bounce by recent signee Cortland Finnegan who's making a late serious push to make the roster as well...

Can you hear the Eagles' Heartache Tonight playing right now?

Might it not be nothing but an utter failure on the part of the front office not to recover some value by trading a cornerback, or two, before roster cuts?

This is getting real good...

I still have a good vibe on our young corner back depth (Crawley, Harris, PJ).

Is it too early to say that the Dixon twins are officially on the bubble?

Side note - anyone know if Finnegan participated in team practice today vs Texans?

JP,
Here are my thoughts on the aforementioned players ...

I only see Tull as a possible cut. Has not been impressive at camp.
Murphy - resolve the fumbling issues & we have a legit threat on punts/kickoffs.
Coleman - inconsistent but he sticks @ the 4th WR.
Lewis - I have no idea but I hope he gets somewhat healthy again. Just don't rush back too soon.
Jenkins - contract year & with the recent Rankins injury, this could save JJ.

jeanpierre 08-19-2016 10:41 PM

Re: 2016 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

And just like that, Keenan Lewis is gone...

Trouble goes back to last season's little outburst on social media about promises re: guaranteed money...

Actually surprised it took this long for his departure - just goes to show the leverage decent cornerbacks have in this league...

Wish Westbank all the happiness he can find, just not at the Saints' expense...

Lewis - gone...

Jenkins - stay of execution with Rankins' injury, but Jenkins is done...

Tull - he's a pure 3-4 OLB, been out a year, and needs 3-4 coaching...

Speed Dial: Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington, San Diego, San Francisco, maybe Denver; expect a 6th round pick...

Murphy - failures to protect the ball, Tommylee Lewis, Daniel Lasco; Murphy had better be spectacular the next two weeks...

Coleman - stone hands, slow development in route running, and inability to use strengths to shield pass path

Really hoped he could do something, but Coleman shrunk rather than seized opportunity this training camp and that could haunt you in big games on one play...

Had my own doubts, but this guy is taking charge and putting his guys and his mark on this defense...

Have a newfound respect for DA, already he's better than anyone we've had in the Payton era...

Now the question is "can he produce results?" Stay tuned...

Keep him at RG and by game 8 we should have a better idea if he is ready to be EVEN thought as a RT pf the future.

Best case ready to start at RT in year 3

Andrus Peat was definitely rushed when compared to Terron Armstead, however, Peat was drafted a helluva light higher than Armstead...

That's on coaching staff and scouts for not having accurate analysis that he could be ready to play right away...

You are not being very positive are you? I'm not saying you are wrong. Peat has not given any indication of the light bulb coming on. Really starting to look like Charlie Brown.

Vaccaro isn't going anywhere...and now with a definite scheme in place, you can get ready to buy his jersey...

Jenkins is not making this team and he probably knows it; latest injury is a neck stinger if I'm not mistaken, before it was a deep bone bruise...

Got to be available...

I never really understood that pick? Not that I dislike him but a NT in my opionion needs to be a force. Just like a SS in the backfield?
