They can structure a contract to put that first year near league minimum plus a bit and go out and fill a couple of other holes and then fill in with the draft and be able to compete right away. As Underhill and Triplett discussed, the Saints would automatically be the favorites to win the division if we could land Carr and be in position to win some games in the playoffs.
Gone to take more than just Carr to put us in contention. We need a really good run game, a bad a$$ TE wouldn't hurt, Peats replacement up front and some deeper depth on the O-line. Another WR after MT gets cut, and that's just the O side. I trade Kamara and draft a stud that can run in the middle and get another back also. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a 2 back set or a 3 headed monster.

Rumor is building for a trade. Best I can tell is a 4th rounder. Although Raider fans are wishing for a #1, which is delusional.

I originally wanted Derek Carr for the Saints. However, I just don't think we can afford him. I know we can afford him, but I'm talking about the future cap hits that we roll back which prevent us from building the team even further. I would rather invest that money in the team in a position other than quarterback. But that won't happen because the front office is all about win now and pay whatever the cost later.

Underhill and Triplett are saying the price tag is the price tag. And even though it is unpalatable to all of us, the market is shifting yet again upward, making his current salary soon average; that in itself is crazy.

I say, if we trade them a 5th or 4th rounder, we could do worse. We instantly are the favorites in the NFC South. And yes, we should still draft Hendon Hooker and/or another QB late. if we don't trade for him, his price tag as a FA is higher salary wise. So we ride him for the next two years and we groom Hooker to take over on a rookie contract.

The most important position on a team is the QB. If you can get a good one whatever you pay is worth it. Paying now or later doesn't matter as long as you win, does it? The cap is going to keep skyrocketing and all of our dead money is rolling off the books.

Yes, the cap is going to skyrocket but I would rather not spend that money on a veteran who will give us two or three years maybe, but is already past his prime. I would rather draft a young quarterback and put these resources into building a better team for him to succeed. I understand that any quarterback that is available will need time to develop behind a stop Gap veteran.

I wouldn't quite call Derek Carr past his prime. He's only 31 years old. Barely out of his twenties. Brees played at a high level for eight years past that age and then a few more after that.
