Just look at Tampa Bay. They have suffered just as many injuries to their offensive line than the Saints. Their offense is struggling and would easily have three or four more losses without Brady under center.

Injuries are the great equalizer.
They are and they aren’t. For every team that only has 4 picks in a draft due to trades, there is a team that has 10 picks in the draft due to the opposite trades. Sometimes when the latter teams suffer injuries to their starting oline, the backups are early to middle round draft picks with much more upside than undrafted free agents and journeyman. We are able to trade so many of our picks because we dont value depth, and we dont value depth because we like having injuries as a reliable excuse. We found players like Armstead, Evans, and Nicks with second day picks. Now we trade away those picks and complain that Peat is injured for the 8th year in a row and nobody could have predicted it. You hold onto those mid round picks because you want to find a successor for Peat.

Carr is ok but its better to find an ok qb with a second day draft pick because they are way cheaper and younger. We are not one player away. We need the cash to pay for dead cap costs of cutting dead weight.
Rugby Saint II and K Major like this.

That is all good and fine, but it may take years of picks for one of those drafted QB's to actually pan out.

That doesn't mean I feel we should make a move for Carr, but an established NFL QB is a known quantity, at least, and worth a little more coin.

Re: I'd like to try and get Derek Carr

Ross Jackson lays out a very reasonable contract structure for Carr and the Saints. Consistent with one normally written up by Loomis/Harley.

We’re projecting terms on a 3-year, $105 million deal (average per year: $35 million) with a $50 million signing bonus and $60 million guaranteed in total.

2023: $1.165 million base salary, $10 million signing bonus prorate ($11.165 million cap hit)

2024: $11.9 million base salary, $10 million roster bonus, $10 million signing bonus prorate ($21.9 million cap hit)

2025: $31.9 million base salary, $10 million signing bonus prorate ($41.9 million cap hit)

2026 (void): $10 million signing bonus prorate ($10 million cap hit)

2027 (void): $10 million signing bonus prorate ($10 million cap hit)
This would allow the Saints to keep the cap hit in 2023 manageable, plan ahead to restructure the roster bonus in 2024 and backload the deal. That way if things work out, the Saints could extend him to drop that massive 2025 hit into future years which they would add to his contract anyway.
