Zaven Collins would be a hell of a pick @28 if he's still there.

FWIW, I don’t actually think Zaven Collins is a great scheme fit. He’s a Patriots/Dolphins fit in the mold of Donta Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins, etc. We’ve shown a ton of interest in him though and we LOVE square peg-round hole LB’s.

I challenge y’all to do your first round mocks too and not do that simulator stuff. It’s a lot harder than I thought lol.

Shades of Stephone Anthony :( ?

I like Collins. His tape shows that he's also good in coverage & can play the run well. A lot of mocks have being selected somewhere between 20-25 or a pick or two after the Saints pick.

Line this guy up next to Demario & could be something we hadn't seen in a while. For a guy that big (260), he sure gets there in a hurry.

Maybe our coaches and scouts eyes are peeled wide open after seeing what Kwon could do next to DD.

FWIW, I also like Jabrill Cox.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Collins as well. I just think he’s a better fit in a multiple scheme and Dennis Allen is not creative enough to use him properly.

Now Jabril Cox, there’s a real baller. If we go with a different position in the 1st I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we traded up in the 2nd for Cox.

Mark Gilbert | DB Duke

4.36 40 at his Pro Day. Scouts had him highly rated high 2 seasons ago, then the injuries happened. According to his camp, he's completely healthy now.

By the way, he's the cousin of former NFL corner Darrelle Revis.

If he checks out it'll be good to have another CB that might be there

Surtain, Horn and Farley will be gone in the top 20 give or take a few picks. We have to pray Greg Newsome falls to us.

Re: 2021 NFL Draft: New Orleans Saints

Oh boy if this true then we need to draft the most pro-ready player who isn’t going to be changing position/scheme and forget about drafting anybody that opted out last season. That’s pretty much how I was already approaching it anyway.

Re: 2021 NFL Draft: New Orleans Saints

Ok so I’ve changed my mock draft and Zaven Collins is no longer available but I have no idea what player to slot to us. Take a look and tell me who you would take if it fell like this...

1. Jaguars- QB Trevor Lawrence
2. Jets- QB Zach Wilson
3. 49ers- QB Justin Fields
4. Broncos- QB Trey Lance
5. Bengals- WR Ja’Marr Chase
6. Dolphins- TE Kyle Pitts
7. Lions- WR DeVonta Smith
8. Panthers- OL Penei Sewell
9. Falcons- CB Patrick Surtain II
10. Cowboys- CB Jaycee Horn
11. Giants- OL Rashawn Slater
12. Eagles- Jaylen Waddle
13. Chargers- OL Alijah Vera-Tucker
14. Vikings- OL Christian Darrisaw
15. Patriots- QB Mac Jones
16. Cardinals- CB Caleb Farley
17. Raiders- OL Teven Jenkins
18. Dolphins- Edge Azeez Ojulari
19. WFT- LB Micah Parsons
20. Bears- OL Landon Dickerson
21. Colts- Edge Kwity Paye
22. Titans- CB Greg Newsome II
23. Jets- Edge Jaelan Phillips
24. Steelers- OL Sam Cosmi
25. Jaguars- DT Christian Barmore
26. Browns- LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
27. Ravens- LB Zaven Collins
28. Saints-

That would suck if the Cows select Jaycee Horn :(. Just last year they drafted T Diggs who just had a solid rookie season.

With the Lattimore "situation", I'm all in on the Saints drafting another top tier CB in a few weeks.

Well the rumor is that Jerry Jones is infatuated with TE Kyle Pitts. He hasn’t meddled in the draft lately but it’s possible they could trade up for him.

True but good ole Jerrah is more of a figure head than he is a GM these days. Stephen (he had to veto his dad's pick of Johnny Manziel) calls most of the shots now. If they choose to ignore the bpa on defense for another offensive luxury item, Dak will need to put up 35+ a game to stay close.

2020 was historically bad on defense for Dallas/Mike Nolan's bunch that ultimately landed him on the street & out of coaching.

IIRC we'll face Dallas this year.

Cannot say i'd be happy with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah myself. A 215lb LB, what is this 1956. He will get run over by power backs, out muscled by TE and mauled if he tries to rush. He's a LB in a SS body.

Also a 5'8 WR in the first round
Are they trying to line up a team of Mumchkins. Harris and Moore. Unless the plans is to sit Moore on Harris shoulders i don't see the point.

If the draft falls as they predict the obvious choice is Newsome

Exactly, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah has put on a bunch of wait to get to his last recorded weight of 221 lbs - that is going to be an oft-injured linebacker...

Koramoah simply can't keep weight on his slight frame; of course he's fast, but run those measurables at that weight, he won't be able to do it...

If one of those CBs is there, that's the position that will have the greatest impact, not linebacker, where this is a deep draft with linebackers that can run, cover...

So if Jabrill Cox falls to the 2nd, is that a legit LB to consider selecting?

Absolutely...

Only player that might give me pause not to select JC with that R2 pick would be QB Kyle Trask (Payton Likes); or if the LB options are still deep, pushed down into R3...

Love the way he catches the ball, high-points the ball, snaps the ball to his body, he's got great short area quickness to evade and pick up YAC; he does have suddenness...

Another WR is needed in New Orleans.

Collectively, no one outside of Emmanuel Sanders stayed healthy. And now he's gone :(.

Interesting nugget of information I noticed going through past drafts. The Saints have only drafted a QB as high as the second round ONLY ONCE in their entire history. That’s got to be some kind of record among NFL teams.

Comparing that to the numbers I posted in another thread that shows the improbability of getting a starting QB. Less than two of three QB's drafted in the first round start half of the games in their career. That percentage drops quickly in later rounds.

An extensive study done in 2015 on all drafts picks (non-kickers) between 2005 and 2014 showed that only 25.5% of all drafted players became starters for at least half of their careers. It also broke it down between rounds taken and position. The success rate (starting) of DL, RB, and WR picked in the first round is only 58%. QB's are only slightly better at 63%.

Here's a nice summary:

Historic Success Chart

The numbers show us the following outline for finding consistent starters:

1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)

2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)

3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)

4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)

5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)

6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)

7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

I think this is one guy we’re all pretty much in total agreement about wanting to draft. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we traded up in the second round for him.

I'd like to see that happen on draft day for the Saints. We need to replenish our secondary. Give me a CB next and I'll be happy.

How about trade the round one pick and move back with two early/mid 2nd round pics?

How about trade 28 to Miami for 36 and 50. That gives the Saints picks 36, 50, and 60.

Take a close look at that success chart I posted. The thing about trading back is your chances of drafting an eventual starter shrinks considerably by round as you move back. You can conceivably trade a first rounder back and its resulting picks back cumulatively and end up with a dozen 6th and 7th rounders and most likely have less of a chance that any those twelve players will end up being a starter than what you could have had using that first on a single player.
