2016 Pro Day Notes: Friday, March 25, 6:15 p.m.
By Tony Pauline, Draft Insider

http://walterfootball.com/college/BYU_logo.gif BYU
The only pro-day event on the schedule today was worth the trip for scouts.

Defensive lineman Bronson Kaufusi stood on most of his Combine numbers but participated in position drills, and as communicated to me, looked like a stud.

Kafusi looked athletic, smooth and forceful in everything he did. Many say it looks like his upper body has filled in and Kafusi is coming into his own. Known as a class act and high-character person, the senior solidified himself as a second-day pick.

Receiver Mitch Mathews turned heads with a tremendous workout.

He measured 6054, 222 pounds, had an arm length of 32 7/8 inches and a hand which measured 10.5 inches. Mitchell completed 12 reps on the bench, touched 38 inches in the vertical jump and 10-9 in the broad. Considered a 4.6 40 guy, Mitchell shocked scouts by running times in the low (4.41) to mid (4.45). His 3-cone time was 6.96 and short shuttle timed 4.21. He caught the ball well and ran good routes, the latter which had been a game-day issue.

Offensive lineman Ryker Mathews measured 6055, 316 pounds, completed 23 reps on the bench and timed 5.05 in the 40. He touched 28.5 inches in the vertical jump and timed 4.64 in the short shuttle.

Mathews, who should be a late-round pick as a swing lineman who can play tackle or guard, met with the Detroit Lions after practice.

been a while since i've posted on here fellas, but this would be lovely....

FANSPEAK:

two trades were performed:

trade down in the 1st.
NYJets proposed a trade & of course id love to pick up some extra selections.
swapped 1st rounders & received the Jets Round 2(20) & 3(20).

trade up in the 2nd.
swapped 2nd rounders with Jacksonville & gave up our 3rd rounder(Pick 15)

results:

R1P20 - WR, Josh Doctson - TCU
R2P07 - DT, Vernon Butler - Louisiana Tech
R2P20 - DE, Bronson Kaufusi - BYU
R3P20 - OG, Joshua Garnett - Stanford
R4P14 - DL, Adam Gotsis - Georgia Tech
R5P13 - OLB, Joe Schobert - Wisconsin
R7P16 - S, Justin Simmons - Boston College

would be crazy! some of these outcomes are very realistic, but Justin Simmons doesn't go in the 7th. & i believe if Butler doesn't go in the 1st he doesn't get out of the top 5 picks in the 2nd. high chance Tennessee takes him at the top of the 2nd. just my thoughts.

Sarik 04-09-2016 05:07 AM

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Also, I think Gotsis goes higher and I don't believe the Jets give up the 3rd as well, maybe a 5th at most if they give up any extra picks at all besides the 2nd

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Small School Star Justin Zimmer Might Be The Most Athletic 300-Pound Prospect in NFL History

If the NFL drafted players in order of pure athleticism, Justin Zimmer might be the first overall pick.

A 6-foot-2, 302-pound defensive tackle from Ferris State University, Zimmer wasn't invited to the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine. Instead, the under-the-radar prospect attended both the Houston Regional Combine and the University of Michigan Pro Day. In both events, he posted absolutely mind-boggling numbers for a 300+-pound human being.

Zimmer's amazing results included a 4.85 40-Yard Dash, a 33.5-inch Vertical Jump, a 7.01 3-Cone Drill and a 9-foot-9 Broad Jump. To top it all off, he also recorded a beastly 44 reps on the Bench Press. It's difficult to quantify exactly how impressive these numbers are, but a tool called Relative Athletic Score (RAS) might be a good start.

It might be tempting to categorize Zimmer as a workout warrior, but his on-field numbers were also incredibly impressive. Last season, he led his team in tackles (81), sacks (13), tackles for loss (26) and forced fumbles (four). True, he posted those stats against D-II competition, but that type of production from a defensive tackle is extraordinary at any level. Zimmer reportedly trained for his pre-draft workouts at Michael Johnson Performance in McKinney, Texas, a facility with a strong history of turning out athletes with solid Combine showings.

RELATED: Michael Johnson's Guide to a Faster 40

In addition to his great numbers in the standard Combine events, Zimmer also has a Squat max of 615 pounds and a Hang Clean max of 405 pounds. Though he's not yet a household name, Zimmer could prove to be a steal in the middle to late rounds of the 2016 Draft. Check out his senior year highlights here.

Small School Star Justin Zimmer Might Be The Most Athletic 300-Pound Prospect in NFL History | STACK

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings...2016&genpos=DT

NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt wrote that, on the whole, "Zimmer had a great workout at the [P]ro [D]ay, and could be a free-agent possibility for a team following the draft." TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline pegged him as a potential sleeper in early January.

Hagan, your post is yet another example of how deep this draft is at 3-tech defensive tackle and why we don't have to default our first round pick to same...

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Damn. Good find Hagan...hadn't heard of him & i already have a top 200+ board. I agree with jeanpierre, couldn't be more accurate. Id like a WR in rounds 1 or 2, a guard in 4 or 5, but four picks defense need to be on defense

2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Alabama DL A’Shawn Robinson | The Draft Wire

Weaknesses
  • Lacks flexibility and bend in his lower half
  • Inconsistent get-off, will often be last defender off the ball
  • Not an explosive athlete, speed-to-power conversion hurt greatly by lack of burst off the snap
  • Way too upright off the ball, gets leveraged consistently and can’t generate push
  • No violent hand usage to speak of, could be a lack of development
  • Pass rush moves are non-existent, no hand swat, spin, grip/rip, swim, anything
  • Inactive/robotic upper half allows him to be blocked easily
  • Struggles to diagnose quickly, often pursues misdirections with several false steps, difficulty locating the ball
  • Not a naturally instinctive player, wins with natural power only
  • Didn’t beat a double team once on tape, completely overwhelmed by them
  • Poor motor, will give minimal effort on passing downs and very little in pursuit
  • Content with battling to a stalemate and simply holding ground
  • Conditioning may be a question

Don't we already have this?!? And we want to spend a first round pick on this?!?

Thank you for saying this, im just not a fan. & while we're being honest...this may be against the grain, but im not a fan of drafting Deion Jones before the 3rd/4th. The testing numbers are all good & nice but it just doesnt transfer to the tape. Theres flashes but the alabama tape & several others just aren't great to me. Gets bullied too often & the coverage skills were just average. I dont see 4.3/4.4 speed anywhere on tape either, its not like the complaints ppl have with Treadwell either, sure treadwell ran slow while not being the biggest possession wr, but his tape shows the opposite which doesn't make it a concern imo. In the end tape trumps all.

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Robinson is what he is. a lane plug and not much more.

Biggest difference I see on tap is in pads.

Allen is pretty much the same thing except he uses his hands better and is quicker to react in the phone booth.Allen maybe a a 5.3 guy in shorts but with pads on he does not change. Game speed is solid and the kid hustles. Off the field issues are a bit of a concern. IMO Allen is the player that has a solid chance in 3 years of being the underrated in the draft.

Robinson is just the opposite. IMO he appears to be even slower. Dudes game speed leaves a lot to be desired. I have ranked bottom 1 to top of the second. The over rated player in the round 1 three years from now.

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

This draft has its gems here and there but the level of talent from round 4 to 7 really stays pretty level.

This is a year to get special teams upgrades cross the board at the end of days 3 all the way through day 3. CB/S loaded. I must have at least 30 players on my short list for these days that I really like. For once a dozen UDFA also.

DT is deep i agree but DE/LB has more than their fair share of solid players in the late rounds worth concidering on upside alone.

This is a great year to rebuild the bench for the entire secondary with players that can multi task and more importantly tackle.

hagan714 04-09-2016 11:33 PM

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Next late round gem? Colston with speed?

Mitch Mathews WR BYU 6055 222
Hands 10 3/8
Arm 33
40 4.47
20 2.61
10 1.57
20 shuttle: 4.25
3 cone: 6.99
VJ: 36
BJ: 10-9
Bench 12

Reports said he looked good at BYU's pro day running routes and catching the ball. what surprised me and everyone I am sure is that 40. I was expecting a 4.60 or so myself. BYUs WRs I joked all year looked like a great crop of TEs. This was a shocker. hope the saints look at this kid.

This draft is very shallow at tight end, interior offensive linemen and wide receiver - all areas of need for the Saints...

Tight End may not look pressing now, but Fleener is fragile, same with Hooui and other kid didn't step up last season; we're going to really miss Ben Watson...

Yeah, saw that on PFT and commented; if I were him, I'd be leery of who drafts or offers him an UDRFA deal, they probably put the screws too 'em...

Last year, when La'el Collins signed with Jerruh's Boys, there was alot of snickering in Baton Rouge that that boy had been screwed twice by Dallas...

Jonathan Vilma said there nothing elite on the board defensively at 12. he said Von Miller is not gonna be there. Therefore, what is the point of drafting decent DT in the first for a defense that needs more than that when there is something that can help the offense tremendously.

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

I agree with the OL idea. The issue I have is IMO this is a weak year for OL in the draft. This effects the rankings of many of the DL players in my book.

So players that made their mark during the off season beauty shows and sky rocketed up the boards may not be all they are cracked up to be.

Unless Ronnie Stanley falls into our laps I really do not see an OT any different from what his name we drafted last year.

Or the saints shock the world and do yet again a major reach of ten or so picks and grab a giant OT that maybe better as a OG Taylor Decker. If they do I am really feeling for Drew

Cody Whitehair ? still not solid on him as a round 1 material

help me if you can I just do see it in round 1.

Maybe round 2,
Vadal Alexander
Shon Coleman
Joshua Garnett

round 3 on looks justified to me

jeanpierre 04-11-2016 07:39 AM

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Know alot of people like him, but I'm not feeling Garnett...

See a guy who's just looking to add to his resume before he goes to Stanford Med School...

He looks soft and reminds me of the other Stanford linemen that was in Miami, Richie Incognito's boy...

There are several quality guards where the value fits the pick more in the fourth round (i.e. Tretola, McGovern)...

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

What is everyone's thoughts on Caleb Benenoch? I watched an interview he had this morning and I believe he can play tackle, guard, or center. Might be mid round quality depth

Quote:

Caleb Benenoch*, OT, UCLA
Height: 6-5. Weight: 311. Arm: 34.13.
40 Time: 4.98.
Projected Round (2016): 3-5.

4/9/16: Benenoch played well for the Bruins in 2015. Still, he should have returned for his senior year to continue to improve his pass protection before going pro. His run blocking is definitely ahead of his pass protection, but Benenoch has some athletic upside. That could be seen in Indianapolis. Benenoch had a strong combine performance where he ran faster than expected. The former Bruin could be a sleeper pick who turns into a good NFL right tackle.

8/15/15: Benemoch broke into the starting lineup as a freshman in 2013 and was impressive. He blocked well in the ground game and showed a lot of potential. As a sophomore, Benenoch was a honorable mention all-conference selection, but wasn't consistent and had some issues in pass protection. His run blocking for back Paul Perkins is further developed.

Byard: Pro day opened eyes around NFL

Byard is coming off a pro day in which he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds and hit 38 inches on the vertical. He also recorded 22 reps on the bench press and hit 10 feet in the broad jump.

After his pro day performance Thursday morning, Byard met with the Cleveland Browns that night.

Soon after, other teams scheduled individual workouts with Byard, who did not get an invite to the NFL Combine in early March. Byard's school record for career interceptions (19) and multiple Conference USA accolades were not enough to garner an invite.
