Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

With the Colston news and all and reading about the state of receivers, I had to skip DE but will get to that afterwards. Here are the current top five projected in my preferred order.

1.
Obviously we know he's at the top. And honestly it isn't close. He lacks some speed, but is tough and all the other receivers are either short or lacking in muscular build. He's not a Cooper or Watkins however, but for us he'll suffice.

2.Josh Doctson vs Minnesota (2015) | Draft Breakdown
Josh Doctson vs Texas (2015) | Draft Breakdown
Josh Doctson vs Kansas State (2015) | Draft Breakdown
Josh Doctson vs Texas Tech (2015) | Draft Breakdown
This was one I wasn't expecting to see. He almost made a case for the top because he did look more quicker than Treadwell. However, he's not in the SEC, he's less than 210 pounds(Wiki has him 190, CBS has him 201). But he could work with us because he's not going to be the number 1 receiver that draws defenses and if he does that frees up Cooks. He is 6'2(wiki has him 6'4) that's one positive, and according to DB he drops some passes. But again, he was the top option at TCU. He got hurt last year so there's that concern. If Treadwell does not fall to us, he may be someone we should try to get in 2nd round.

3.
Small sample size, and looks quick. But he's 6'0. The only negative and that's a big one. He does not benefit us over Doctson.

4.Corey Coleman vs Texas Tech (2015) | Draft Breakdown
Corey Coleman vs Oklahoma State (2015) | Draft Breakdown
Corey Coleman vs Kansas (2015) | Draft Breakdown

My issue here is similar to Fuller, he's short in stature. He looks quick in that Baylor offense. But Big 12 competition can be deceiving. He's also possibly inury prone. I'm staying away.

5.
He wasn't even the number 1 here. So he lacked targets, and didn't break away well from defenses either. He also cannot pass block. But we should know never to draft an offensive player from a Meyer system.

Draft
Round 1-Treadwell
Round 2-Doctson
Do Not Draft
Round 1-Coleman
Round 2-Thomas
Round 3-Fuller

I will get to the next batch tomorrow or the weekend where I can observe Cooper(who plays for my gamecocks and I ended up quitting watching early season on because I knew what was going to happen).

Doctson He is a big boy 6'2", with good hands, pretty good speed 4.50 and serious hops. wrist injury is my main concern but that appears to be healing well. Could turn out to be the best WR in the draft

On the flip side his routes tree and discipline running it need some serious work. Freaking spread offense effect rears it ugly head yet once again. The ability to beat press/Bump and Run coverage are a weak point.

With that said I can still see him going in round 1 but upside and football IQ? Is there enough there to justify the pick?

I fear he may end up being another Robert Meachem.

2016 NFL Draft: Matt Miller's Post-Combine Scouting Notebook | Bleacher Report

Interesting notes as always with a little Saints tidbit:

"The release of Marques Colston in New Orleans opens the door for a big outside receiver. I'm told area scouts there have a real liking for Michael Thomas of Ohio State, and could consider him if Sheldon Rankins and Darron Lee are off the board in Round 1."

Sorry fellas but the Saints will take either A Robinson, Rankins or Billings with the #12 pick. Edge rusher or a big nasty to clog of that middle. Expect a FA WR signing down the road.

Book it ;).

Wouldn't be surprised. But what FA receivers will be available? Coleman should have all the opportunities at least if we don't get one.

Safer Picks?

DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson
RB Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State
WR Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss
NT Jarran Reed, Alabama
DL A'Shawn Robinson, Alabama

Of the three only one does not make me cry, break down and whimper sure.
Darron Lee - Undersized fast WLB? ok i can see it but it is a big reach based on need.

But these two? Would make me break down and cry. All upside and a high risk. :(
Michael Thomas- route tree? press? blocking? in our division?
Sheldon Rankins - Undersized pass rushing DT?

So the saints will pick the one of the last two and do it to me again this year.:brood:

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Pro days have started.

OLB Stephen Weatherly Vanderbilt

Outside linebacker Stephen Weatherly was the only player from these two schools to get an invite to the 2016 NFL Combine. He ran a 4.61 40 (t-6th)), had 23 reps on the bench press (4th), and had a 31 inch vertical (t-19th). He stands 6'4 and weighed in at 267 pounds. His 34 1/2 inch arm length was No. 1 among linebackers, and would have been tied for 8th among defensive linemen AND linebackers. He appears to be a day three prospect, who could eventually work his way into the starting lineup if he can turn his physical tools into production. He strikes me as a guy who could very well be on Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly's respective radars.

TE Steve Scheu,6046 253 7/FA
many felt should have been invited to the combine, had a good day. Scheu reportedly was timed the 40 in the high-4.6 range; and given that that is likely a hand-timed clocking figure that his actual time is somewhere in the mid-4.7 range. Scheu also has 23 reps in the bench press.

FS R.J. Williamson reportedly ran even faster with an unofficial hand-timed 40 in the mid-to-high 4.4 range which likely translates to somewhere in the 4.55 range. Williamson, who was at the Shrine all-star game, also had a 35″ vertical and a 10-4 long jump

Vi Teofilo G Arizona State 6030 325 5.17

NORTHERN ARIZONA
P/K Ryan Hawkins, who led all punters in the FCS ranks with a 46.0 average kick last fall, though, demonstrated plenty of leg strength as both a punter and kicker.

All eyes of the NFL will be on David Onyemata March 14.

The University of Manitoba Bisons defensive lineman will hold a pro day football workout for at least 12-16 NFL scouts.

Onyemata, 23, has made a lasting impression at the CIS level and continues to pursue a professional football career.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to work out for NFL scouts,” said Onyemata. “I appreciate coach (Brian) Dobie and his staff and the support they have shown me.”

Or, he had that 'crazy, junky, down-n-da-hood look' in his eyes that scared the white out of 'em and don't want him walking the hallways of their buildings...

Shaq Lawson seems a one-trick pony bust of a first round pick to me...

We haven't done well with running backs from Ohio State, and Ezekiel Elliott doesn't have a stellar social media record with his coaches, teammates...

My position is clear with regards to Treadwell...

I see the two Bama guys different with regards to positon...

A'Shawn Robinson I see as a NT and will be as good John Jenkins, not worth a first round pick, and will need better players around him as he enjoyed at Bama...

Now, Jarran Reed is someone I could see taking at No. 12 and would be an excellent DE or NT in a 3-4 front;but with Dennis Allen as DC, that's not likely to happen...

Sheldon Rankins has Sedrick Ellis 2.0 written all over him; getting rolled up and out often, leaving linebackers exposed...

Michael Thomas, just not sold, something is just making my spidey-sense tingle that there's something not right...

Myles Jack OLB UCLA 6011 245 4.56
look at this
Darron Lee OLB Ohio State 6006 232 4.47

IMO his stock has sky rocketed because of injury, the media love for OLB and the fear of missing out on that surprise draft pick. Like over valuing DE because they are the glamor diva of the NFL.

He is a huge reach IMO. some 15 to 30 picks higher than he should be. season end i had him as a high round two.

Re: 2016 NFL Draft Prospect Thread ...............

Jalen Ramsey Vs Darron Lee

Jalen Ramsey, FS/CB/OLB Florida State, 6005, 209
Hands 9 1/2 Arms 33 3/8 Wing
40 4.41
20 2.57
10 1.51
3 Cone 6.94
20 Shuttle 4.18
60 Shuttle 11.10
Bench 14
Vertical 41.5
Broad 135

Darron Lee OLB/SS Ohio State 6006 232 4.47

Hands 9 3/4 Arms 33 1/4 Wing
40 4.47
20 2.60
10 1.54
3 Cone 7.12
20 Shuttle 4.20
60 Shuttle
Bench 17
Vertical 35 1/2
Broad 133

They are mirror images of each other. The only difference is Ramsey has coverage skill that make him a great FS. Lee does not so he is IMO a SS playing LB. He would be an upgrade to KV probably. If Lee had better ball skills, which he may have, then I would be open to the idea a little bit more. If you are drafting a safety this high he better have ball skills.

Want a boobie prize on day 2 of the draft? here you go Ramsey clone #3

Sean Davis S/CB Maryland 6011 201
Hands 9 1/2 Arms 31 3/8 Wing
40 4.46
20 2.60
10 1.56
3 Cone 6.64
20 Shuttle 3.97
60 Shuttle 11.53
Bench 21
Vertical 37.5
Broad 126

SS or FS makes no difference. Line him up next to Byrd day 1. Ball hawk, solid tackler and creates fumbles. Saints get the second best FS/SS/CB in the draft behind Ramsey. He is the next best thing to Ramsey in the draft and might be there in round 3. Put 20 to 30 more pounds on the kid and you have a poor mans Lee at OLB but this time he has coverage and ball skills. Which in my opinion is a waste, just like playing him at CB last year. FSU did the same stupid thing.

I really like this kid. He did much better at the combine than I thought he would and would not be surprised to see him go in round 2. If the saints went this route I would be happy and have a big crow in freezer ready to eat. wait I still have my Rob crow so I am all set.

The 2013 NFL Class was a supposed deep class at safety...

Three were taken in the first round alone (Vaccaro, Reid, Elam)...

And Jacksonville took Jonathan Cyprien at the top of the second...

Other than Reid, most have had little, if any, individual impact...

Every other year we hear about this deep, class of defensive linemen...

This year's class is no different, many are ranked way too high...

I find patience in the draft when the position is deep with talent is better...

In the 2012 draft, Denver GM Elway felt the position was deep and waited...

He selected DE Derek Wolfe in round 2 and Malik Jackson in round 5...

We should show the same patience with regards to this deep DL draft...

Teams Grading Xavien Howard in the Early Rounds
Updated Feb. 23, 2016
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

Every year, there are some early-entry players in the NFL Draft who go under the radar with the media despite teams being impressed with them. In speaking with sources at five different teams, Baylor cornerback Xavien Howard would fit that description this year. All five teams had Howard graded in the first three rounds, with some being very bullish about his NFL prospects. No team had Howard lower than an early third-round pick.

One team picking in the top 10 said they have a first-round grade on Howard and project him going late in the first. Another playoff team said they had Howard graded as a high second-round pick. Two other teams said they had Howard on the bubble of the second and third round. Those were the lowest grades on Howard among the five teams. The fifth team saw him as a mid second-round pick.

Sources say they wouldn't be surprised if Howard becomes a hot name at or after the NFL Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder has great size, and teams are impressed with his 2015 tape. As a junior, Howard totaled 42 tackles with 10 breakups and five interceptions for the Bears. He isn't a one-year wonder either. In 2014, he had 51 stops with 13 breakups and four interceptions.

Teams Don't View Laquon Treadwell as a Top-10 Talent
Updated Feb. 5, 2016
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

Over the past two seasons, the NFL Draft has produced some strong classes of wide receivers. This year, the draft isn't as strong at wideout, but that hasn't stopped the media from hyping up Ole Miss wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. It isn't surprising, as Treadwell was a star recruit coming out of high school, and he was a 3-year producer at Ole Miss. There have been lofty comparisons with Treadwell to other elite receiver prospects, but NFL teams aren't grading Treadwell that high. In fact, most of the teams we've spoken to have Treadwell as a late first-rounder, with only one saying they have him as mid first-round pick.

The teams that are grading Treadwell as a late first-rounder say whoever likes him enough to draft him might do so in the middle of the first round. A general manger of a playoff team believes that Treadwell is a little overrated, and he views him as a big, strong, possession receiver in the NFL. Two other teams said they had Treadwell as a late first-rounder. One college scouting director said Treadwell could go in the mid first because this a weak year for receivers and teams will draft out of need at the position.

The reason that teams aren't as high on Treadwell as the hype machine is a lack of speed to separate. They view Treadwell as a big, strong, long, possession receiver with good hands. He routinely uses his size and strength beat defensive backs for 50-50 passes. However, he isn't fast or explosive. He isn't a vertical threat to stretch a defense over the top. If Treadwell had speed, he'd be similar to Julio Jones or A.J. Green and a top 10-pick. Teams say they aren't expecting Treadwell to run fast at the Combine.

The team that has Treadwell graded as a mid first-round pick, and liked him more than others, believes he has some characteristics similar to the Texans' DeAndre Hopkins in the ability to win 50-50 passes. Hopkins was a late first-rounder in the 2013 NFL Draft, but Houston clearly out-scouted the rest of the league, as Hopkins is one of the best players to come out of that draft class.

If the 6-foot-2, 229-pound Treadwell runs well at the Combine, it could help to change some minds and push his draft grade higher. Right now, teams see him in the middle to back half of the picks on Thursday night with a grade of a late first-rounder being held by many teams.

sell me on this kid. I would think of him more of a safety. I like the way they summed him up. 'see ball, get ball' attitude. but i see a kid that will require safety help deep. he is incredible at roughing up WR in coverage especially down field. He has the talent but his instincts worry me. for being so physical his run support is really lacking in effort. So as a CB he is a major project. As a SS safety he seems to lack desire. As a FS he has to answer the IQ question. i am just lost on this kid and the hype he is getting to make him a second rounder.

See previous page to start (http://blackandgold.com/saints/75959...tml#post694741)...

Xavien Howard, Baylor, Cornerback

Hagan...watch his closing speed, like you said "go get ball", just absolutely amazing...

soft, soft hands - he intercepts the ball over the shoulder better than most pro prospect receivers...

his size gives us a big DB to match up on the larger receivers; he would smother smaller ones like Josh Norman did to Cooks on end zone routes...

he could play both safety and cornerback; could allow Damian Swann to move to Free Safety...

and my favorite...Howard can absolutely bring the wood, decleating smaller running backs...

I see all of that. But I see Browner also. I also a CB that hates to tackle in run support. He is a FS IMO. If your going to draft the kid that and that is your plan so be it. I can devote the time to him. We can not dump Jairus Byrd till 2017 at the earliest, so we need some one. I just want some one at FS that is good in run support and more refined in pass coverage so we can clear Byrd from our books. If this is to be the guy they better be ready to coach him up and make sure his football IQ is enough to work with.

As a CB I think NFL WR are going to abuse his physical playing style. Add to it the conference Baylor played in is not really loaded with top notch QBs.

I am just so hesitant on the kid as a CB. I do not like read react skills as a main selling selling point at CB. Instincts are huge. Read and react is a safety trait.

Xavien may be better suited to play safety. The kid likes to mug you at the line & that is a no no at the NFL level. Will have issues with shifty, quick receivers. Saw him last year vs Texas Tech at Jerry land stadium ... big corner.

Good value in the 3rd rd.

Side note: I wouldn't touch him in the 2nd.

Hagan, you did see him tackling, laying out the running backs, right?

You did see his incredible timing on the ball, that is instinctual?!

I am trying JP I am really trying but I just can not go here. close but.....

I watch more than few baylor games and I was not that impressed to see him in round 2. Just like Andrew Billings at 12.

Then there is the speed offense thing also. covering half a field at a time against WR running weak route tree makes me pause. While the spread offense is a high scoring, fun thing to watch, it does little to get college players ready to play at the pro level.

I will have to chew on this pick for a while.

Today was Marshalls Pro-Day
My homer favorite, Swedish guard, Sebastian Johansson had a good day.

OL Sebastian Johansson
40 yards: 5.14
Vertical jumps: 32 1/2
Broad jump: 9-5 (Would have been tied for second at the combine)
Pro bench (225-pound reps): 26
L-drill (3-cone): 7.27 (Would have been best result at combine)

The Saints had no representative there today but I am still hoping :-D
