Wonder if we see a Taysum extension
I could see him getting a new 4 years deal but being paid in that TE/WR 2 sphere around the 9/10ml mark. I guess it all depends if he feels he is a starting QB or if he knows that being a offensive weapon and back up QB for the Saints is best long term. Could take a big chunk off the cap.

Raider about to give Carr a 5 year 160ml extension. 32 million a year for Carr.

I just can't see the team investing in a one read and run QB. Taysom is a great gadget player but when he's under center he's very limited. Taysom needs some touch to his ball since he likes to throw bullets.

Regardless of what we think Taysom could, or could not become, his current contract stupefies me. Why give him that much money, wrt cap impact, when:

1) His body of work hasn’t proven he’s that valuable.

&

2) They’re not even certain he’s “the guy”.

For all the amazing cap maneuvering and work the Saints as an organization have been behind, I just don’t understand that contract. It baffles me, lol, yes, I did say “baffles”.

No way I pay him anywhere near 8 digits in an extension. Maybe $4.5M per year, somewhere in that range, not much more though.

Edit: Grammar

I'm not talking of them investing in him as a QB but as a offensive weapon/back up QB. As a all round weapon and part of the QB room I think you can justify a 9/10ml a year deal. It depends if he still thinks he's a starring calibre QB

Trev Siemian would be a capable back up under Payton. I say deal taysom for draft picks. He goes back to special teams expert, with capable QB next season.

It's worth noting that Marcus Williams has been at or near the top in grading for safeties by PFF since his rookie year, yet in these rankins, Williams is listed at the third safety in their free agent rankings...

PFF suggests Jenkins was brought back to give flexibility to Williams' expected departure; that'd be disappointing as the aged Jenkins struggled to keep up, no where near as consistent as Williams this season...

Unless the Saints get a really good offer and do a sign and trade for Armstead, suspect Ramczyk will be extended with a lower front end cap number now, and will move to LT when Armstead's contract expires...

lee909 02-25-2021 08:04 PM

Re: 2021 NFL Free Agency: New Orleans Saints

Rather trade Armstead a year to early and get a pick than let him see the deal out. A 3rd rounder a year after he leaves is little use, getting a late 1st or 2nd means you can look to replace him. As you say move Ramczyk over if need be

Backloaded contracts galore this offseason boys. The cap is going to skyrocket in the coming years.

The NFL is a money making machine. That's why everyone in the know wants to jump on board.

Subsidized by public funds and television contracts - too big to be allowed to fail - we must give the citizens their games...

And those citizens are now global. NFL easily makes up the most watched shows on all of television and will continue to do such on other platforms, as well. Gotta love it!

For event broadcasting, yes - Comparing apples & oranges though...

With the advent of streaming et al media, folks now can choose to watch alternate entertainment on their schedule, not the same with event broadcasts...

The NFL has been king for two decades, but is now seeing decline in its numbers...

Funny how those most Bama guys wash out but those Louisiana State boys seems to find more success in the NFL - Keep signing with Bama!

Twelve of the twenty most watched primetime shows in 2020 were NFL related.

As for a decline in numbers, ALL broadcast televised programming is on the decline with the advent of streaming. I know several people that watch all of their NFL content via stream, including both of my sons. One of them gave us a firestick for Christmas so I may be among those numbers soon.

PFF predicts Marcus Williams will be in high demand.

Here was their quote …

Prediction: "Jaguars sign Williams for four years, $57M ($14.25M APY): $30M total guaranteed, $18.5M fully guaranteed at signing."

FWIW I hope the Saints can somehow retain Marcus for 2021. Kris Richard could take him to another level at FS.

Hopefully they find a way. If not potentially 3x 3rd round comp picks next year.

Terry Fontenot, Marcus Williams and T-Rex
Pretty useful for a team on a little rebuild for depth and cap savings.

Not sure, hearing about some locker room rumblings about players in certain camps...

Do I believe Taysom can be a viable starting QB in the league? Absolutely.

For a guy who hadn't taken snaps in four years, he was impressive; he got a case of the fumblelitis that he's got to skill correct, but Payton saw enough to believe he could be the starter.

Want no part of Jameis Winston; and if Bruce Arians, who's coached some pretty quarterbacks (i.e. - he knows quarterbacks) let Winston walk, that should be speaking volumes...

I didn't know being a QB in the NFL was so dependent on looks. :D

Well, how does turning the ball over look early, often, then playing catch-up racking up stats, but still losing look? ;)

And Arians obviously saw something, or didn't see something in Winston that didn't look right.

I'm doubtful that skill is what it will take to overcome the fumbling issues. His hand size may be the issue. At 8.75 inches it is almost a full inch smaller than the average NFL QB's hand (9.6). Brees is at 10.25, a full inch and a half larger than Hill. Russell Wilson also has 10.25 hands. In comparison, Michael Vick had small hands (8.5) and averaged almost a full fumble per start over his career. That ratio was consistent throughout (ie. he never improved).

Richard Sherman landing spots hub: Latest news, rumors, scouting report and interested teams

Richard Sherman was one of the elite cornerbacks in the NFL for nearly a decade, even though his best days may be behind him as the three-time All-Pro enters free agency for the second time in his career. Sherman is still one of the top cornerbacks in this free agent class despite a 2020 season that was hindered by a calf injury that limited him to just five games.

When healthy, Sherman is still one of the game's top cornerbacks. Just look at his 2019 season, when he logged 61 tackles, 11 passes defensed and three interceptions in earning his fifth Pro Bowl appearance. Opposing cornerbacks had just a 62.3 passer rating when targeting Sherman, who allowed just one touchdown on the year. Teams courting Sherman in free agency will be looking for the player that still is one of the game's top cornerbacks when healthy -- a playmaker and a leader for a young defense. Sherman believes he still has two good years left before hanging up his cleats for good.

We'll look at every report and rumor for Sherman in free agency below, along with a scouting report on the free agent cornerback. We'll also look at some of the ideal landing spots for Sherman, as the cornerback is set to leave the San Francisco 49ers.

Top free agent landing spots for Sherman

1. New Orleans Saints

How can the Saints afford Sherman in free agency when they are currently $69 million over the salary cap (per Over The Cap)? There is a key reason why New Orleans may court Sherman anyway, as the defense has a deep connection to the "Legion of Boom" days.

Kris Richard was hired as the Saints' defensive backs coach last month, the man who is credited as the architect of the "Legion of Boom" defense -- where Sherman earned three consecutive First-Team All-Pro selections and was the leader on a Seattle Seahawks defense that won Super Bowl XLVIII. The Saints are expected to shift to a Cover-3 scheme in the secondary, where Sherman thrived in Seattle and San Francisco -- so why not entertain the Saints as a possibility.

New Orleans has become one of the best defenses in the NFL over the past two seasons and the Saints have been Super Bowl contenders every season. For a team needing a player to help the Saints capture that elusive second Super Bowl title, why not bring in a leader such as Sherman to get them over the hump. A physical, aggressive corner of Sherman's caliber is just what New Orleans needs.

Well, Brett Favre had large hands and had a high fumble rate...

While I don't dispute it as a factor, ball security can be coached up...

And Joe Burrow, No. 1 pick last year, has small hands which he pokes fun at himself...
