We shall see.

Well now :p.

I guess the Saints front office did not wish to see how much he would get in the open market & they value his abilitylong term.

Something says they still have bad feelings about allowing Malcolm Jenkins to walk many seasons ago & didn't want repeat a mistake at the safety spot.

But you have to assume they are not far away in numbers after talking to his agent. Just stops him getting a deal elsewhere. Likely a place holder while they figure out terms

Yup. I agree.

Liked our DBs without Malcolm Jenkins - just didn't think signing Byrd to that much was the answer either...

Especially in light of his faltering production subsequently.

Anzalone has made up his mind he's leaving - he never felt he was welcomed here anyways...

IMO Alex had lots of opportunities to shine and make plays over the years.

It only took Kwon one game to do what we wanted to see out of Thor.

Oh well .. good luck to him in Free Agency.

** Edit post -

Didn't see JP's #254 post on the recent Saints restructures …

Peat & Jenkins.

Side note - I'd move on from Patrick Robinson as well.

To get the most cap savings, a designated post 1 Jun cut with Latavius Murray would only save $3⅓M...

Of note, cutting Tre'Quan Smith would save $2,183,000 in cap space - consider, Marquez Callaway basically overtook Tre'Quan on the depth chart (snap count) by the end of season...

I wanted Emmanuel Sanders in Free Agency the year he signed on with the Niners. Only a short stay in New Orleans but he was a nice compliment to MT.

This one will sting a little for me but hey the NFL is a business.

Marquez Callaway time … if he can stay healthy, a solid #2 option at WR.

WR pass catching TE. Ecomes a must in the draft/FA.

Not much there behind Thomas and Kamara now.

Trautman looks good but still needs to prove it.

Hopefully a healthy Calloway and Harris combo as well. Gotta believe Payton can get somebody to catch the ball.

He was a nice addition but it took him forever to grasp Payton’s offense. He was a free lance type WR that did what he had to do to get open and the qb has to find him, Payton’s offense is by the book so bye bye

Re: 2021 NFL Free Agency: New Orleans Saints

Honestly i understand the Sanders release, it makes sense.
Get a younger WR through the draft or a FA on a longer term deal you can back load his deal. It's a shame they didn't get Sanders when he left the Steelers or the Broncos. Always felt the perfect player for a prime Brees. Could have been like having lance Moore on steroids.

Alot of talent out there this year and in the draft so should be able to get someone in. I still like the idea of more of Taysum as a WR/TE

Remember we don't have Drew to make any WR look good. It'll need to be a Sean Payton system player. Also, I wonder if Harris can take the beating being used more as a WR? It doesn't look like he can hold up to the increased load because of his small build. On the other hand, Callaway is a future stud!

Now this leaves a big void. We have one outside CB now.

Re: 2021 NFL Free Agency: New Orleans Saints

That is going to hurt.

As it stands a reduced pass rush and no legit CB2 in a division with the amount of great receivers teams have.

What could go wrong.

They really better have a plan more than get the top CB left in the draft

Liked the necessary move when we made it, and I like that we're moving on - we need to get younger and cap friendly at CB2...

This is my greater concern (pass rush); we barely had one with Trey Hendrickson having a break-out year...

Can Davenport finally play like a Round One pick, never mind Sean's Draft Management Foolhardiness?

and can Granderson be the Ready-5 guy?

I agree with this. Janoris was a solid #2 but he's up there in age + his cap hit made this a necessary cut based on the Saints current situation.

If I had one guess, I believe Malcolm Brown will be the next cap casualty. I'd cut Patrick Robinson (2M savings) as well.

Time to get younger, faster, stronger - see Tampa's secondary.

Loved having his depth, experience, but it was very expensive...

Know it's not popular with some here, but I want P.J. Williams back...

We've got to have at least two Swiss Army knives as reserves for the DB group...

The draft doesn't have to be the plan. Every team in the league are making these same sort of cuts as the Saints. All of these players, including those we cut, are going to be out there on the open market and will be signed at figures far lower than those they were carrying when released.

And we'll be right at the cap with all the contracts re-worked with the exception of Thomas, Kamara, Lattimore, and Ramczyk...

And we have two quarterbacks under contract - Drew Brees and Taysom Hill...

So, I'd say either trade or draft, or some amalgamation of those is what we definitely will be seeing...

We're learning the hard lesson that you can't buy every Star Wars Action Figure...
