Hadn't seen it posted but the Saints have declined Ruiz's 5th-year option.

Former 1st rounders gotta show more than one "improved" season.

I'm not at all surprised by the Saint's front office.

It appears only ten of the 32 5th year options from the 2020 draft has been exercised. Other teams have until 4:00 eastern, i think, to make their declarations.

Regardless of how well Ruiz is currently playing, $14 to $21 million is pretty steep for 2024. They should be able to extend him for a more reasonable number.

And there you have it ... The growing trend across the league on 5th year options and 2nd contracts. It makes the draft ever more incrementally important. While the NFL attempts to unearth new and newer revenue sources to keep up with the demands of the salary cap, at some point the goose that lays the golden eggs will curtail her production. Absurd money is getting even more absurd. It's unsustainable long-term.

Actually, the newer revenue sources are not required to keep up with the demands of the salary cap. It's the other way around. The salary cap is directly tied to the league revenue. As the revenues increase it is mandated by the CBA that the salary cap (ie. player salaries) must increase by the same percentage. The latest broadcast contracts have ensured that the revenue growth (and the corresponding salary cap) will continue at the same mercurial pace for the next decade, at the very least.

You can add Patrick Queen to the growing list of those not getting the option year.

Bottom line is that top coin is reserved for players that consistently put in the work. Ruiz is nowhere near that category.

The price tag of the 5th-year option is reserved for top-tier players.

14M? Hell naw.

In other words, when revenues increase by 10% from one year to another the mandated player salaries must increase by the same percentage. But note, the owner's portion of the revenues also increases by the same percentage. The CBA states that players share of the revenues are 48.8% meaning that the owners get 51.2%. Therefore, when the player's salaries increase the owner's portion of the revenues increase by an even greater amount. No matter how high player salaries climb the league will continues to make even greater profits.

Looks like we got a lot of needed pieces (free agency/draft) to compete ... specifically @ QB.

Coaching (play calling) and overall health need to improve for 2023.

Correct those things ... you'll have a shot.

Because it hasn't been allowed to be used in the NFL in decades and just became available.. Every other number between 1 and 99 are just another number. Just like the Popeye's Sandwich was so coveted. It only just became available. ;)

Looks like 2020 wasn't the year for most of the league as far as slam dunk 1st rounders, huh? Basically two thirds of the draftees aren't getting the 5th year option applied. I wonder if the pandemic had something to do with stunted growth and such. There was basically no offseason work for this class for the first two years.

OK... so the Popeys Sammich was marketed to elicit the result we all saw. There was not really a shortage. And the sammich is overrated and super salty, tbh.

So are you saying the number 0 was marketed to be coveted, when it's not in reality, since it has not been used in a really long time?

It's just a cool number. That's it. I remember watching Jim 'Double-0' Otto play back in the day. That was a cool number. "00"

We needed to cut the deadweight. With them gone we have still only have FIVE slots on the 90 man roster open for free agents. Luton's spot was a waste the second we drafted Haener. Gore was gone when we signed UFDA RB SaRodorick Thompson. That leaves us with six RB's (Kamara, Williams, Miller, Washington, Benjamin, and Thompson) and one FB in Prentice.

I would love for Drew to come in a coach the qbs or just help anyone he can. It would be nice just to have him around the players and remain a part of the organization

He would have been politely told there are two numbers not available any longer ... 8 and 9. Not officially retired numbers, but not available according to a Jeff Duncan article last year.

Okay, Frankfurt doesn't really have an Oktoberfest like Munich. And even if you make the short trip south, you'll be out of luck - the game is scheduled for November.

But still, come on over! And whatever you do - do not drink the Äppelwoi.
