Cap hit previously was $15 million. So signing for $4 saves a lot I doubt he will even have a chance to hit the incentives like to see what those are. Being on roster one of them or is it playing time?

Found this does this sounds about right?

The defense is what it is because of the five DB's. Changing it to accommodate a third LB could defeat the whole purpose. I feel Elliss excelled because he was playing in the Werner role while Werner was out. Besides, we could be in line for another compensatory pick with Elliss leaving.

As for Jameis, who's paying him 8M to ride the bench? He's getting 4M if he rides the bench. He doesn't get 8M unless he earns incentives and those surely require NOT riding the bench. They call those incentives not likely to be earned (NLTBE) and they do not count against the current year cap. If earned they are applied to the following year's cap.

Yup. $4M isn't bad at all for a decent backup. Good deal there.

Re: Official 2023 OFFSEASON Thread

There's a reason why we ranked so poorly in run defense last season. It's like we need to be more balanced on defense or something. It would also be nice to retain quality defensive players we seem to can't afford at the time we're trying to free up cap space every year.

I'm sure we're going to make some moves... in time. One day we're going to get our pick of the litter. Ndamukong Suh and Calais Campbell are both 36 and affordable now. Looks like both may be a perfect match here.

We do need new blood on the DL... It's entirely possible part of the issue on stopping the run are some of the departed DL bodies. We drafting heavy DL in a heavy quality draft

While Harley helped develop the principles they use and surely deserves that credit, there isn't really anything that couldn't be replicated by someone he has trained. What would be missed is his scouring new CBA's for changes that can be exploited further.

I understand it was time to "re do" the D line but I somewhat disagree with Chris here. Even with a down year in 2022, losing David O, Davenport, Ellis & Ninja Tuttle (decent in rotation) is a big deal for this defense + we have a new D-line coach & DC.

No one knows how the "replacements" will do or if they will mesh.

Even with the draft, there are still plenty of unknowns.

What's Kwon Alexander doing these days? ... Ellis is a Falcon now.

The Saints need depth pieces.

Sheldon Rankins is another one I'd keep an eye on.

Why do rankins can suck here twice?

Not sure if you watched any of the Jets last season but Sheldon is still a solid run defender & he has never "sucked". Ever.

Last time I checked, the Saints just lost two contributors (David O/Tuttle) on the D line & being able to stop the run is paramount if you want to compete in the NFL.

Aaron Donald, Chris Jones & Grady Jarrett aren't options for us at DT

From what I saw, as a blocker he was effective as always, as a pass catcher he was basically invisible.

Juwan Johnson looked far and away the better player to me.

Somewhat underutilized. He was only targeted 22 times, but had 18 receptions with a lone TD.

A little - the fish was drafted specifically for his blocking with hopes of gradually improving as a pass catcher. TE's take time however I don't see Trautman in black and gold after this season.

I'd definitely look at drafting another TE but hey, that's just me.

I don't see him coming back either. We need better receiving TE depth and Trautman never became the TE we envisioned. Taysom is a TE in name only and defies a traditional role at any position. Find one in the draft.

Looks like we'll absolutely be having some compensatory picks coming our way next year. Losing free agents to division opponents scores higher in the formula.

From the above link:

Free agents lostFree agents gained
DE Marcus Davenport ($13M), Round 4
DT David Onyemata ($11.6M), Round 4
LB Kaden Elliss ($7.1M), Round 6
DT Shy Tuttle ($6.5M), Round 6

I'm genuinely at a loss for how we address the D line.

It's looking like mid-level FA (barring a trade) and hope to get a difference maker in the draft?

This year's draft is presumably rich with TEs. Let's get one! We'll keep Trautmann around. He's coming around.
